WORLAND - It was a double gut-punch for the Warriors last Friday. During the game's second series, all-state QB Kade Weber left the game due to injury. Afterward, the Warriors suffered their third loss of the season. With the 3A East No.2-seed in the balance, the Warriors (3-3) fell to the Buffalo Bison 49-7 at Warrior Stadium on Oct. 7. It was a bitter loss for the Warriors. After Weber's injury, the Warriors did strike first on the scoreboard going up 7-0 on a Brock Douzenis 44-yard pass to...
WORLAND - Coming off a strong tournament in Casper the previous week, last week was a letdown for the Worland Lady Warriors volleyball team. Yet, while last week might have been a setback, the Lady Warriors look to get back on schedule at this weekend's 3A West conference duals. The Lady Warriors played three games last week, traveling to Rawlins on Sept. 27, hosting Lander on Sept. 29 and hitting the road to face Buffalo on Oct. 1. Worland went 1-2 in their three games last week, defeating...
WORLAND - Running on their home course on Sept. 22 at the Green Hills Golf Course, the Warrior and Lady Warrior cross-country teams turned in some quality times in front of their family and friends. The Warriors finished third at the Warrior Invitational, scoring 76 points. Buffalo was second with 74 points, and Cody won the meet with 58 points. Trajn Swalstad was the Warriors top runner at home, crossing the finish line at 17:14.10 and finishing fourth. The next Warriors to place were Jack...
WORLAND — The Chief Nation Invitational in Ethete on Sept. 9 served as a state preview of sorts, allowing runners to get a feel for the state course come October. Along with seeing the layout of the state course, last week showed that the Warriors are among the top teams in 3A. The meet in Ethete was scored differently than usual, with the top four runners counting toward a team’s score rather than the top five. The Warriors finished fourth with 81 points. Third was 4A Natrona County with 64 points, second was 3A Mountain View with 50 points, a...
THERMOPOLIS — A few adjustments here and there, and the Hot Springs County volleyball team had one of their best weekends yet, coming off the Rawlins Invitational tournament in Rawlins on Sept. 9-10. The Lady Bobcats dropped all three games in pool play in their final pool match against Douglas. HSCHS volleyball coach Shannon Hill went back to an old formation and moved outside hitter Lexi Overfield to the middle. While they still lost to Douglas 2-0 (21-17, 21-18), the play from the Lady’ Cats was highly encouraging. Overfield was still abl...
WORLAND - For the first time this season, the Worland Lady Warriors are hosting their first home meet. With so many swimmers and divers close to qualifying for state, this weekend could be where Worland has multiple athletes punch their ticket to state. The Lady Warriors quad meet will see them compete against Buffalo, Pinedale and Powell on Friday at 5 p.m. Worland closes out the week in Powell at the Powell invitational. "We have a bunch of girls that are right on the edge of qualifying for...
WORLAND — Four new members are set to be inducted into the Warrior Hall of Fame during next week’s homecoming festivities at Worland High School. The 2022 Warrior Hall of Fame class members are John Davis, Rondo Fehlberg, Patrick Gentzler and Kristie Hill-Mortimer. Created in 2019, the Warrior Hall of Fame represents the best that Washakie County School District No. 1 has had to offer. Whether that be students, teachers, administrators, others who have worked in the district or those who have made philanthropic support to students or the dis...
WORLAND — The motto for the Worland High School cross-country team this season is “Rise Above.” In their first meet of the season, that motto was tested and held true as the Worland runners battled a wild array of weather. Competing at the Billings Invitational on Aug. 26, the Warriors and Lady Warriors had to run through a wild stretch of weather filled with a downpour of rain and hail with multiple delays due to lightning and hail. Even with the weather testing them as much as the competition on the course, the Worland runners still poste...
WORLAND — Week 1 of the Worland Warrior football season kicks off against the Powell Panthers next week. But before then, the Warriors close out their training camp with a Week 0 scrimmage against the Hot Springs County Bobcats tomorrow at Warriors Stadium. Hosting the Bobcats for tomorrow’s Week 0 scripted scrimmage gives the Warriors a chance to correct some things that came up during the team’s inter-squad scrimmage last Saturday. “We just want to fix those things from the inter-squad scrimmage,” said WHS football coach Patrick Sweeney....
At long last, the moment has come. We’re four weeks out from the kickoff of the NFL season, which means it’s time to release the most courageous 2022 NFL predictions. I’ve looked at the roster moves for all 32 teams, crunched the numbers and have arrived at the most accurate prediction for the 2022 NFL season. These predictions are so precise that there’s no need to check if they come true. (Same with last year’s, no need to go back and look…please don’t go back and look.) As is tradition, I’ve broken the most courageous 2022 NFL predictions...
WORLAND - The Worland Warrior golf team opened their season with a second-place finish at the Park County Shootout on Aug. 11-12 at the Powell Golf Club. The Warriors shot 345, 353-698 and finished second behind Lovell, who shot 348, 343-691. Winning the boys individual tournament was Warrior Landen Gilmore. The senior shot a 78-77 to finish first. Gilmore was joined in the top 10 by teammates Jackson Dunham, who finished sixth (90-81), and Tyshon Swalstad, who finished ninth (83-90). Sam...
I’ve recently taken up learning French. That sounds grander than it is. All I did was download Duolingo on my phone. But it’s time to flex what I’ve learned by writing a poem in French to honor the passing of NBA legend Bill Russell. Il s’appelle Bill Russell. Je suis Alex. Chat. Chien. Bonne nuit. Alright, so it’s mostly nonsense and not even close to honoring Russell. I just started learning and only know like 30 words. Nonsense aside, I remember watching a “Sports Century” piece on Russell when I was in high school. I was about to turn the c...
WORLAND - It was years and years of work, but at long last, Worland's Craig Smith crossed off his goal of winning a title at the World Horseshoe Pitching Championship. Held in West Monroe, Louisiana, on July 11-23, over 600 horseplayers battled it out at the World tournament, playing up to five games a day. For Smith, he brought home the top prize in the Elder C2 class. There are six age divisions, junior, cadet, open men, open women, seniors and elder. From there, players are separated into...
WORLAND - On display until Aug. 31 at the Washakie Museum, the Pitch Perfect: The Worland Monarchs exhibit highlights one of the most dominant teams in the history of Wyoming women's fastpitch softball. At the peak of their powers, the Worland Monarchs won six consecutive state championships, won 63 straight games and went 245-58 from 1970-1977. Not many in Worland may know the Monarchs' tale, but their history and achievements fill an entire room at the museum. It is a perfect way to retell...
TEN SLEEP - May 21, 2022, was the final day for Desiree Egger as the head coach of the Ten Sleep High School track and field program and that day brought an end to one of the more successful runs in program history. For 12 seasons, Egger has been at the helm of the Ten Sleep track program, and the weather was far from perfect during her final state meet, but that did not spoil it one bit for Egger. "State has always felt like a period at the end of a chapter for a season. This year though, it...
WORLAND - The 2022 boys soccer season ended with the Worland Warriors hoisting their fourth consecutive 3A State championship and improving their unbeaten streak to 67 straight games. The Warriors closed out the season with a 17-0-1 record, their 17th win coming in the 3A State title game, where they defeated the Torrington Trailblazers 7-0. Adding to their state championship run, the Warriors also had four players named to the All-State tournament team: Jorey Anderson, Court Gonsalez, Cole...
WORLAND — In what could be a good sign of things to come, the Worland Lady Warriors soccer team nearly knocked off the Cody Fillies, 3A’s No. 1-ranked team, on May 14 at Warrior Stadium. In the final 90 seconds of the first half and down 3-0, Lady Warrior Elli Aguayo, off an assist from Rivers Carrell, gave Worland their first goal. The Lady Warriors (8-7) carried over that energy from the late first-half goal into the second half. Cody (14-0) had been dominating the possession, but in the second half, it was Worland taking the attack to Cod...
WORLAND - While they fell just short of pulling off the upset, the Worland Lady Warriors soccer team looks like a team just beginning to play their best soccer. The Lady Warriors (7-6) went 1-1 in their two games last week. On May 5 in Lander, they lost to No. 2 Lander Valley Lady Tigers (10-3) 3-2, and on May 7, they defeated the Pinedale Lady Wranglers (2-12) 10-1. Against Lander, the Lady Warriors led at halftime 2-0, but the Lady Tigers scored three goals in the second half, their third...
TEN SLEEP - The Ten Sleep Lady Pioneers had their first track and field state qualifier last week when Isabelle Fox punched her ticket to the 1A State meet at the Buffalo Invitational Twilight meet on April 28 in Buffalo. Fox qualified in the high jump, clearing 4-7 and finishing second in the event at Buffalo. "She was fist pumping and just excited," said TSHS track and field coach Desiree Egger on Fox qualifying for state. "She's been wanting that, and it tied her best from last year. She's ca...
Remember when super teams were all the rage in the NBA? Every offseason, headlines ran like, Super Team X will dominate this season and for the next decade. Disgruntled superstar wants out and wants to teammate up with other superstars. The Knicks looking to build their own super team. (One of the funniest running jokes in the NBA is that the Knicks organization and their fans believe they’re a free agent destination with that owner.) But after the disastrous seasons by two super teams this season, the super team blueprint might be dead in t...
WORLAND - It's been a tough season for the rebuilding Worland Lady Warriors softball team, but against Rock Springs, they finally got to put one in the win column. On April 7, Worland split with Rock Springs, losing the first game 21-0 but winning the second game 8-5. April 8, they lost to Green River 28-1 and 20-5. "We got our first win of the season, and the girls were so excited," said WHS softball coach Crystal Redding. "We started off shaky, but the girls came alive in the fourth inning....
A too-wild-to-be-true-but-certainly-plausible story dropped a couple of weeks ago and somehow just entered the public consensus last week. The story involved Tom Brady and Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross orchestrating a way to get Brady to the Dolphins. The Boston Globe and Pro Football Talk were the first big media outlets to report this story. Since the report is as unnecessary convoluted as a plot in “Westworld,” I’ll paraphrase the best I can. Brady and Ross hatched a plan to get Brady to Miami by having Brady retire. Ross would then...
There was a lot going on during the postseason sabbatical, plus some things that just popped up this week. So I’ll try to hit through each of these topics rapid-fire, or, as rapid as I can be. WATSON Refraining from any jokes, the Deshaun Watson trade isn’t surprising. Kirk Cousins is 59-59-2 all-time in his career and just got paid again, boosting his career earnings to $141,496,600. (Who says mediocrity doesn’t pay.) We all know the QB position is the most important position in the NFL. So, of course, a team desperate for a QB would trade...
WORLAND — The young Worland Lady Warriors softball team took their lumps in their first games of the season in Cheyenne last weekend. The Lady Warriors started the season with three straight losses competing at the Cheyenne Invitational on March 19, losing 21-2 vs. Cheyenne South, 15-0 to Wheatland and 23-0 vs. Cheyenne Central JV. “The girls played their hearts out,” said WHS softball coach Crystal Redding. “We’re a young team; we’re mostly freshmen and sophomores. Then with the weather, we were on the field only once before playing tho...
WORLAND - It was not the hardware they were after, but the Worland Warriors showed their resolve and scrapped their way to two wins to finish fifth and bring home the consolation championship from the 3A State tournament in Casper on March 10-12. A pair of upsets in the regional tournaments set up a showdown between the Warriors and Douglas Bearcats in the quarterfinals of the 3A State tournament. Douglas and Worland were No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, all season and had the best records in 3A....
