I’ve been on this job for six years now. It’s one of those things where I still feel like a rookie but also feel like those six years have been measured in dog years. Thinking about that on one of my many drives over the past few weeks, I realized that’s a good balance to have. Having a job feel old and new at the same time keeps things from getting stale. Especially over the past two years, I’ve talked with friends who are actively looking for new careers or, at the very least, casually perusing what’s out there. While I haven’t reached tha...
WORLAND - The indoor track and field season wrapped up last week in Gillette on March 4-5, and while Worland High School only had one placer in the season's final meet, the Warriors and Lady Warriors still had plenty to be proud of. Warrior senior Aaron Carver was the only Worland athlete to place at last weekend's state meet. Carver ran an 8.27 and finished sixth in 55-meter hurdles. "Overall, the kids did what we had expected," said WHS indoor coach Shawn Ivie. "They went out and competed the...
WORLAND - It was a frustrating end to the regular season for the Worland Lady Warriors, but with the postseason here, they have turned their attention to the 3A West regional tournament and one of the four state tournament bids up for grabs. Worland (9-12, 3-3 3A Northwest) lost to Kemmerer 38-31 on Feb. 26 at WHS in their regular season and home finale. After a strong start offensively, the Lady Warriors struggled with their shot in the second half. "Offensively, we started out well. We were...
WORLAND — Saving their best for last, the Worland Warriors boys swimming team ended their season on a high note during last week’s 3A State meet in Gillette. “We could have swum a little better in a couple of events, but we still wouldn’t have finished any better. We were too far behind Buffalo but third out of 13 teams is pretty good. A lot of people took notice of Worland swimming at state,” said WHS boys swimming coach Justin Howe. The Warriors finished third at the 3A State meet, scoring 112 points. Buffalo was second with 211 points, a...
If you haven’t heard, Penn swimmer Lia Thomas smashed a lot of records last week, and a lot of people are up in arms. Thomas is at the center of a new round of American culture wars because Thomas is a trans woman. Then here in Wyoming, as of writing, the bill SF0051 Fairness in women’s sports act is in the Senate Education Committee would ban transgender women and girls from competing in high school and collegiate sports that aren’t their biological sex at birth. To quote Nigel Tufnel, the hyperbole and emotion surrounding the topic of trans...
WORLAND - The Ten Sleep Pioneers notched their ninth win of the season last week, and it was their biggest win yet. Coming off a 76-51 loss to Burlington on Feb. 4 in Burlington, the Pioneers hosted 1A Northwest foe, the Meeteetse Longhorns, on Feb. 5. Meeteetse had beaten Ten Sleep, 52-34, on Jan. 24 in Meeteetse. Ten Sleep was also shorthanded for Saturday's game. They had no subs for the team as only five players dressed. But past results and only having five players wouldn't matter for the...

WORLAND - In their first swimming meet of the season, four Worland Warriors qualified for the 3A State meet in Laramie on Feb. 17-18. "I couldn't be happier with the first meet," said WHS boys swimming and diving coach Justin Howe. "We had four qualifiers, and it really stems from their practice. I haven't had to motivate this year. I give them their workout, and the captains take it from there. We're just swimming and working hard. The kids who didn't qualify are right there. We figure to add...
WORLAND — What is harder than winning a 3A State boys basketball championship? The answer, defending a 3A State title. That’s the position the No.1-ranked Worland Warriors are in as they head into the 2022 season. What the Warriors have going for them is that they return three starters and seven players from that state title team. What the team will need to figure out is how to replicate the production from Mack Page and Rudy Sanford. Sanford scored 389 points last season, averaging 16.9 per game, and Page led the team with 416 points with 18....

The Warriors (3-2, 2-0 in 3A East) defeated the Rawlins Outlaws (0-6) 49-7 on Oct. 1 at Worland High School. “We set some goals and didn’t want to underestimate Rawlins because they’ve been getting better every week,” said WHS football coach Patrick Sweeney. “We wanted to work on our in-between-the-tackles run game, and I felt we got better at that. We also wanted to make sure we went out and respect...
WORLAND - This is the point in the girls swimming season when personal records are being set each week, and for the Worland Lady Warriors, each meet brings new PRs as seconds are being dropped all over. "I liked the intensity that the girls brought to both meets," said WHS girls swimming coach Mike Blissett. "They ca...

WORLAND - Southside Elementary has a new principal as former Worland High School vice principal Brian Gunderson takes the reins. As Gunderson settles in, his No. 1 goal is to keep it rolling. "I got into the position not just for the kids but for the staff. That's been the part that's been the scariest for me. They've done...

They put together two good rounds of golf. We got so far behind after the first day, and we had three guys not play particularly well, and that happens. Hopefully, we can get it out of our system, and we can bounce back at state....
