    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jul 13, 2018

WORLAND - Worland youth wrestler Jeff Kordonowy traveled to Pocatello, Idaho, on June 22-23 in the AAU West Grand Nationals tournament. There Kordonowy showed how tough Wyoming wrestlers are as he tried his hand at Greco-Roman, freestyle and folkstyle. Wrestling for the Billings Wrestling Club, Wyoming does not have an AAU wrestling chapter, Kordonowy won in all three styles of the schoolboy division, in three different weight classes, 110, 115 and 122 earning him the prestigious Triple Crown...

  • Yellowstone Lake Invaders: Bolstering the ranks

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jul 11, 2018

Yellowstone Lake Invaders is part of series that will take a look at the efforts to restore the Yellowstone cutthroat trout in Yellowstone Lake and will be featured in the Wednesday's Outdoors page. YELLOWSTONE - It takes a village. Everyone knows that saying. It takes a village to help preserve the Yellowstone cutthroat trout in Yellowstone Lake by removing any nonnative species. Wordy, absolutely, but the point remains the same. When it comes to tackling the problem of nonnative species in...

  • 16U Wildfires gearing up for state tournament

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jul 10, 2018

WORLAND - The season comes to an end this weekend for the 16U Worland Wildfires as they play in the Wyoming Fastpitch Softball state tournament this Friday through Sunday in Casper. The season has had its highs and lows for the Wildfires but down the stretch, the team has put together strong outing after strong outing. Defense and pitching have been the key to the Wildfires better play of late. From the mound, pitchers Zoe Fernandez (four wins on the season), Brooke Hellyer (five wins) and...

  • Hear Me Out...Putting the NBA hand-wringing to rest

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jul 7, 2018

Twitter, while certainly frustrating at times, does have plenty of positives. It provides a steady stream of information and news, breaking or otherwise. Offers a positive connection between notable people and their fans. But one of my favorite aspects of the site is the endless supply of hand-wringing and top-shelf hyperbole. This is where Twitter reigns supreme compared to other social media sites. If you just woke up from a 14-year coma and gave Twitter a go for the first time, you’d think the rapture came and went and Satan’s reign was at...

  • Hear Me Out...Column Buffet: A little soccer, a little NBA

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jun 30, 2018

We're on the cusp of the dog days of summer for sports news, the point in the sports calendar where the new and interesting topics slow to a trickle. After the NBA offseason, or once the big names have decided on a new team, this part of the year there's only baseball left, which doesn't get interesting until August. The World Cup will do its part to keep things fresh during this stretch but we're in the knockout rounds with the games becoming fewer. So it's time to bust out the column buffet....

  • Worland Baseball goes 3-1 in home tourney

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jun 26, 2018

WORLAND - Before their big tournament in Heber City, Utah, 13U Worland Baseball held their annual summer tournament Saturday and Sunday at Newell Sargent Park, and after four hard-fought games, Worland finished the tournament 3-1 against a pair of Billings teams. This year's tournament did not have as many teams due to scheduling conflicts for the usual Wyoming teams like the Casper Crush. Nonetheless, Worland battled against the Triple Play Academy Black Sox and Cobras, both out of Billings,...

  • Hear Me Out...What if we did away with the NBA and NFL Drafts?

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jun 23, 2018

The NBA Draft went down Thursday night and 60 men saw their dreams come to fruition as they joined the world's best basketball league. The days leading up to the draft there was plenty of draft-related talk about where Luka Doncic was going to land or if Cleveland had a deal in place to trade their No. 8 overall pick. But among the typical draft talk, something else caught my eye. ESPN's Bomani Jones, by either his show High Noon or on Twitter, mentioned getting rid of the NBA Draft. I like...

  • Consistency at the plate the main focus for Worland Baseball

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jun 22, 2018

Consistency at the plate the main focus for Worland Baseball By ALEX KUHN Sports Editor WORLAND - Defense and pitching have been strong for the Worland Baseball 13U and are the team's go-to strengths this season. However, when it comes to their bats the results have not been to their liking. Inconsistency at the plate has bothered Worland the most. Some games they will be locked in like they were in their wins against Casper, 10-0, and Gillette, 10-4, on June 9 in Casper. While other games it...

  • Worland Wildfires picking up steam

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jun 21, 2018

WORLAND - The season started slowly for the Worland Wildfires 16U team, but over the last couple of weeks the team has found their rhythm and have strung together strong performances. Opening the season in Gillette at the Battle of High Plains tournament the Wildfires matched up against other 16U and 18U teams from Wyoming and Nebraska. Things did not go well as they went 1-5 and committed 25 errors in six games. The Wildfires were shutout in against the Casper Voltage, 8-0, lost to the Casper C...

  • Plan to put field 4 to use being considered

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jun 19, 2018

WORLAND - Field 4 at Newell Sargent Park is hardly used during the baseball and softball seasons, but that could change soon if Worland Recreation Board baseball commissioner Ken Shearer's plan is given the thumbs up by the community. Shearer is proposing taking field 4, which is seldom used by the adult recreation league softball leagues, and converting it into three separate fields for the tee-ball and coach pitch baseball leagues to use. "We're looking at making three 100-foot fields for...

  • Hear Me Out...Father's Day

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jun 16, 2018

My father, Pete Kuhn, passed away in a mining accident on Oct. 31, 2017. I know, a downer way to start the column but hang with me. This will be the first Father's Day I don't give him a call or celebrate with him, which is weird. Sunday will feel a lot like when his birthday passed, just that sense that I'm forgetting something paired with a hollowness feeling to the day. While days like his birthday and Father's Day re-emerge the deep pain from the day he passed, it also brings with it...

  • Hear Me Out...Getting a jump on the LeBron sweepstakes

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jun 9, 2018

Thank goodness for the NBA. If it weren’t for the NBA, today’s column would be about the NFL and their masochist approach to solving problems. Players’ kneeling during the anthem was dead and about to be buried with other NFL controversies like Deflategate, Spygate and Bountygate. The number of players kneeling by Week 17 last season had dropped off significantly since Week 3. It was over and rather than letting it go quietly the 32 owners felt like they could deal a dramatic deathblow with a new rule. Instead, the 32 botched the execu...

  • Green Hills' new golf pro settling in

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jun 8, 2018

WORLAND — The Green Hills Golf Course has a new golf pro in Bill Watkins and for him the job is a dream come true. Watkins hails from California and having spent most of his life in “The Golden State” coming out to Wyoming has been a great adventure. Not only is this undiscovered territory for him, Green Hills is also his first golf pro position. “It’s all brand new to me. The farthest north I’d been before coming here was Northern California. I was born and raised in California and lived there...

  • Even with struggles, Simmons finds a way to place third

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jun 7, 2018

WORLAND - The JGAC (Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado) IMG Junior World qualifier tournament did not go as planned for Worland youth golfer Karsten Simmons, nonetheless, he still found the means to finish in the top three. It was one of those tournaments for Simmons, playing at the Indian Tree Golf Club in Arvada, Colorado. Nothing seemed to break his way as he shot a 74, 4-over-par, for the tournament and just missed out on qualifying for the IMG Junior World tournament. But bad breaks and all,...

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jun 5, 2018

WORLAND - The awards and recognition for the Worland Warriors boys soccer team keeps coming. This time Warrior head coach Ron Overcast received the accolade by being named the 3A Boys soccer coach of the year by the Wyoming Coaches Association. Overcast coached the 2018 Warriors to their first 3A State soccer title in program history with a 2-1, extra time victory over Star Valley in Jackson on May 17-19. The Warriors boasted the best record in 3A with a 14-1 regular season record, their only...

  • Hear me out...A wild week in the NBA

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jun 2, 2018

The NBA kicked off this week with three-straight days of headline news then had a wild Game 1 of the NBA. Sunday LeBron James made his eighth consecutive NBA Finals, Monday the Warriors showed why they're an all-time great team and Tuesday Philadelphia 76ers president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo got busted having five, five, burner accounts on Twitter; in which he (and/or his wife) ripped Sixer players, Sixers coach Brett Brown, other NBA GMs and revealed nonpublic medical information about some of his players. COLANGELO The...

Worland went 1-1 in their two home games, beating Gillette and losing to the 406 Flyers, a team out of Billings, 11-1. In their victory over Gillette, Worland had to play the game on the Babe Ruth field, since...

  • Another excellent year in the books for Ten Sleep track

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|May 30, 2018

TEN SLEEP - The 2018 track and field season started with a bang for the Ten Sleep Pioneers and Lady Pioneers, and it ended with a bang at the 1A State meet in Casper on May 17-19. The goal heading into the final meet of the season for the Lady Pioneers was to better last season's third-place finish. Mission accomplished because the Lady Pioneers finished second with 94 points; adding to the achievement, the Lady Pioneers numbered six strong. "Our goal was to do better than what we did last year...

  • WHS spring golf wrap-up

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|May 29, 2018

WORLAND - The Worland High School boys and girls golf teams and Worland Middle school club team finished their spring season on May 11 in Thermopolis, and overall it was a promising season that built strong momentum for the coming fall season. "It was a great season overall, with 8 top 10s for the high school teams. Nine of our students at the high school level had PR's [personal records]. Karsten [Simmons] was able to notch a couple more victories. The area we improved the most was on short...

  • Simmons battles through rain-soaked weather at JGAC tournament

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|May 26, 2018

WORLAND - Worland youth golfer Karsten Simmons finished second in the 16-19 age division at the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado tournament at Pelican Lakes Golf Club in Windsor, Colorado, on May 12-13. Even with poor weather Simmons shot an 81 for the first round and 76 in the second for a 137 total. "The course conditions were a bit rough and the weather was a major impact on all of the scores," said Karsten's father, Randy Simmons. "Lots of wind, rain and aerated greens kept the scores all...

  • Four Lady Warriors and four Warriors named to 3A All-State soccer teams

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|May 25, 2018

WORLAND -Now that the 3A boys and girls soccer seasons are finished and champions crowned, the individual accolades will bring a close to the 2018 season. Both the Warriors and Lady Warriors are well represented on the All-Conference and All-State teams. The Warriors had four named to the 3A All-State team (Matt Gesch, Konnor Macy, Rylan Mocko and Wyatt Wyman) and six to the 3A West All-Conference team (Gesch, JT Klinghagen, Macy, Devon Mercado, Mocko and Wyman). The Lady Warriors also had four...

  • Worland Track brings home plenty of medals from state meet

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|May 23, 2018

Worland Track brings home plenty of medals from state meet By ALEX KUHN Sports Editor WORLAND - The early goings of the 2018 track and field season were spoiled by weather, and in a fitting measure the season's final meet, the 3A State meet in Casper, had plenty of bad weather. Still, with all the lousy weather at Kelly Walsh High School, the Worland athletes were able to endure and bring home some medals. "I took 23 kids down to Casper and 19 of them brought home medals. Saturday under...

  • Getting it done

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|May 22, 2018

JACKSON - Before the 3A State boys soccer championship match Worland Warriors coach Ron Overcast laid it out plainly for his team, "I talked with them and said we've knocked on the door of this title game twice. Today, let's go blow the hinges off of it. And we did it," he said. Blow the hinges off the door the Warriors did as they were victorious 2-1 in extra time over the Star Valley Braves Saturday at William T. McIntosh Stadium in Jackson. That's not to say there were not a few worrisome...

  • Lady Warriors advance to third-straight 3A title match

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|May 19, 2018

JACKSON - Even with the Rawlins Lady Outlaws putting on added defensive pressure, the Worland Lady Warriors found a way to win their semifinal match and advance to their third-straight 3A Girls state championship match Friday morning at Jackson High School. The Lady Warriors won 2-0 and both goals were scored by senior, and Sheridan College soccer signee, Casey Wassum. On the first goal in the 19th minute, Wassum beat the Rawlins back line and, with a defender draped all over her, blistered a...
