By Sisco Molina Sports Editor The Worland girls swimming team made it two conference titles in a row on Saturday, winning the 3A East Conference meet in Cody on Saturday with a total of 354 points. Douglas was the next closest team in second place with 204 points, edging out Cody with 202 to round out the top three teams. The Lady Warriors crowned three individual conference champions in five different events and also won both freestyle relays on their way to their second consecutive 3A East...
BURLINGTON – Aaron Papich came into his first season as the head coach of the Burlington football team expecting to compete for a playoff spot in the 1A West. What he got was something entirely different. A lack of numbers forced Papich and the Huskies to forfeit seven of their eight games this year and they nearly had to cancel their season. But the fortitude and dedication shown by the players has kept the season alive. Numbers were low as the Huskies began fall practice in August – the first...
WORLAND – The Lady Warriors wrapped up the regular season in dominant fashion on Friday, defeating Cody by a wide margin in their last home meet of the season. "I'm elated with their performances tonight. They really finished hard and were able to send the seniors off with a win," Worland swim coach Kim Wyman said on Friday. "It's been really enjoyable to watch (these seniors) grow as individuals and as a group. They really have been strong leaders on the team." The meet started off with a b...
WORLAND — The Lady Warriors went on the road to Rawlins Thursday and came away with a 99-81 win, highlighted by a new state qualifying time from Felicia Aguilar in the 100 breast. Aguilar won the event with a time of 1:22.87 and now has qualified in her second event this year after doing so in the 100 back at Worland’s home meet on Sept. 26. Worland saw a small drop in its times, but overall coach Kim Wyman liked what she saw in the pool Thursday. “Overall, our times were not fast but we are being consistent in our approach to individual races...
BASIN – From 2012-14, the trend for the Riverside football team was the same every season. The Rebels beat the teams they're expected to beat and lose to the teams they're expected to lose to. They were able to sneak their way into the playoffs as the No. 4 seed the last two years, but were shut out on the road at Lusk both times – losing by a combined score of 123-0. But in 2015, that trend has changed. The Rebels have a 5-1 record through six weeks – the loss being a forfeit against 2A Greyb...
WORLAND – The No. 2 ranked Lady Warriors put another check in the win column on Friday night as they took down Torrington in four games at home 25-12, 25-16, 23-25 and 25-17. Worland (14-7, 2-2 3A Northeast) used Friday's match to try some new things out offensively and for the most part, Worland volleyball coach Brittany Miller was pleased with the way her team executed despite learning it all in such a small time frame. "We put in the offense for the first time (Thursday) night in a walk throu...
WORLAND – In his first fall season at the helm, Worland golf coach Chad Rose was impressed with the improvement he saw from the Warriors in only a month's time. While all of the other fall sports continue on in to late October, golf's state culminating events took place over the final weekend of September. And in the short time the team was together, Rose saw some promising things. "Our kids started off shooting 480 on the boys' side and no girls' team score. Chassidi Garay joined us in week t...
WORLAND – No. 2 Worland looked back to its old self Thursday as the Lady Warriors (12-6, 2-1 3A Northeast) defended home court with a four-game win over No. 1 Buffalo 25-17, 25-18, 17-25 and 25-11. The win brought Worland to a tie with the Lady Bison (13-5, 2-1 3A NE) at the top of the standings in the quadrant. The Lady Warriors knew it would take a good performance to knock off top-ranked Buffalo and they delivered one in front of an electric home crowd. "I think every win is a big win, but i...
WORLAND – This week's premier match in 3A volleyball will take place this evening in Warrior Gymnasium as the Lady Warriors play host to 3A Northeast foe Buffalo. The outcome will not only effect the quadrant standings, but likely the overall rankings as Buffalo (13-4, 2-0 3A Northeast) comes in sitting atop the WyoPreps.com Coaches and Media Poll while Worland (11-6, 1-1 3A Northeast) is ranked No. 2 despite receiving the most No. 1 votes. A match of this magnitude without a doubt adds a lot o...
WORLAND — Foul play has been ruled out as the cause of a fire that destroyed a home north of Worland. No official cause for the fire has been determined at this time. At 7:32 a.m. Monday morning, Washakie County Dispatch received a 911 call reporting that a structure was on fire. The Worland Fire Department responded to the scene at 7:33 a.m., arriving at 7:42 a.m. The four-bedroom home, located at 223 U.S. 20, was a total loss, Worland Fire Department Chief Chris Kocher said. According to Kocher, the building’s four occupants had left hom...
WORLAND – Heading into the Lady Warrior Invite on Saturday, Worland swim coach Kim Wyman knew her team had a chance to win its home invite for the first time – but she knew the Lady Warriors would have their work cut out for them. So when the meet ended Saturday afternoon and the final scores came through, even she was a little surprised. Worland ended up winning its home meet, but by a much larger margin than anyone could have anticipated, finishing with a team score of 293 – 35 points ahead...
After building a 36-stroke lead at the conclusion of the first day of the 2A state golf tournament, the Thermopolis boys were able to extend that lead Saturday to run away with the team title and repeat as state champions. As a team, the Bobcats cut four strokes from their first day score – finishing with a two-day team total of 752. In second place was Sundance/Hulett 61 strokes behind with a two-day total of 813. “It was interesting feeling because they were all very happy that they won, but none of them were particularly happy with how the...
WORLAND – The Lady Warriors started off their weekend with a small meet Friday, playing host to Douglas and Rawlins in the Lady Warrior Pre-Invite. It was treated as sort of a "fun meet" for the team according to coach Kim Wyman as the girls got to choose the events they swam in. And still Worland came away with a first place finish, winning with a team score of 148.5 while Rawlins was in second with 98 and Douglas third with 76.5 "I felt we had solid swims today. This week, we ended up u...
WORLAND – It was only fitting that in Worland's only home meet of the season, a senior came away with a win. Chance Martello won the boys race for the Warriors, finishing in first place with a time of 17:19.66 which had him nearly seven seconds ahead of 4A Sheridan's Micah Sweeney in second place at 17:26.50. "As the race started to progress it started getting better and better for me ... I'm really happy that I won. This is only the second year running for me and I'm a senior and I got to w...
WORLAND – After a letdown in Newcastle on Saturday, the No. 3 Lady Warriors were back on their home court Tuesday with a match against 3A West foe Cody. Worland started off strong but had a bit of a lull in the third game before ultimately putting away the Fillies in four games 25-20, 25-17, 15-25 and 27-25. "We needed a win tonight," Worland head coach Brittany Miller said after the four-game victory on Tuesday. "We needed to get better in transition and I felt we were a lot better t...
TEN SLEEP – The scoreboard may have read 73-32 in favor of Meeteetse at the end of the homecoming game Saturday, but Ten Sleep coach Andy Ray feels the score wasn't indicative of how well his team played against the No. 2 ranked team in the state. The Pioneers wanted to stop the big plays against the Longhorns and force them to sustain drives rather than give up long chunks of yardage. They also wanted to go out and make some big plays of their own. And for the most part, Ray was happy with w...
WORLAND – When the final buzzer sounded against Buffalo on Friday it signified not only the end of the game, but also the end of the nonconference schedule for the Warriors. After a 1-2 start against 3A East opponents in the first three games, Worland coach Todd Weber and the Warriors are ready to put those games behind them as they quickly shift their attention to conference play and the long haul of the season over the next five weeks. That's not to say the Warriors were without positives t...
By Sisco Molina Sports Editor WORLAND – Look out 3A volleyball world, Worland is coming. And with the win, a long drought against Douglas is suddenly over. "This was a huge win for our program. I don't know when the last time was that we beat Douglas," Miller said after the win Friday. After dropping the first t...
WORLAND – After spending the last three weekends on the road for preseason tournaments, Worland will finally see its first action in the friendly confines of Warrior Gymnasium as it hosts defending 3A state champion Douglas today at 6 p.m. It's the popular match-up in 3A as both sides come into the weekend ranked in the WyoPreps Coaches and Media Poll – Douglas controlling the No. 2 spot with Worland right behind at No. 3. The two teams are also divisional foes in the 3A Northeast. All the gre...
WORLAND – The Lady Warriors are set to take on another meet on the road as they travel to Powell once again for a dual. Worland was in Powell on Saturday with a number of other teams, but will be competing head-to-head with the Lady Panthers this time around. "I think we match up very well with them. We maintain about the same number of swimmers," Worland coach Kim Wyman said of Powell. "I'm kind of excited because it's the first time we've ever really matched up this well with them. "The g...
WORLAND – The Lady Warriors continued their strong start to the season Friday as they hosted Buffalo, Newcastle and Powell in their first home meet of the season. The upperclassmen performed as well as expected and a few of the younger swimmers excelled as well in the small meet at the Worland Aquatic Center. "I saw some great things developing from some of our underclassmen," said Worland swim coach Kim Wyman. "This team has potential to surprise people at the culminating events by the s...
WORLAND – The weekend could not have gone any better for the Lady Warriors. After splitting matches at the Douglas Invite to open the season, Worland went 4-0 over the weekend and never dropped a single game as it won the Border Wars Invitational in Cody. Pitted against various teams from Montana, the Lady Warriors were unmatched on the court and seemed be clicking well early on. "In volleyball it's very easy to play at the level of competition, it's hard to play above that. But our girls p...
LANDER – Todd Weber’s head coaching debut didn’t go as smoothly as he would have liked Friday, but he was happy with the result as the Warriors found a way to win a close game in Lander 13-6. The offense had trouble sustaining drives due to mental errors across the offensive line – mainly false start penalties, bad exchanges from the center to quarterback and subpar pass protection. Luckily the defense was up to the task, holding Lander to only 97 yards of total offense and also keeping the offense from scoring. “I was super proud of our kids,...
WORLAND – Football is finally back. First up on the schedule for the Worland Warriors is a familiar opponent – the Lander Tigers. The two teams used to be conference rivals in the 3A West for a number of years until the Tigers moved to the 3A East 2011. The two teams didn't face from 2011-13, but saw each other once again last year in a game that saw Worland prevail 36-14 to the tune of 453 yards on the ground. But first-year head coach Todd Weber has it in his mind that the Tigers are not to...
DOUGLAS – The Lady Warriors were able to shake off a slow start to the Douglas Invite on Friday, bouncing back with a strong showing Saturday to come away with a fifth place finish in the gold bracket at the two day tournament. Only managing to win one match Friday, Worland won two out of the three matches it had Saturday. The resiliency the Lady Warriors showed was exactly what coach Brittany Miller wanted to see out of her team. "Day one in Douglas, we didn't play like we had been in p...
