  • Alabama band to march at inauguration, igniting controversy

    Jan 3, 2017

The marching band of Alabama’s oldest private, historically black liberal arts college has accepted an invitation to perform at President-elect Donald Trump’s inaugural parade, organizers said. Talladega College’s band will march at Trump’s inauguration as other historically black schools such as Howard University, which performed at President Barack Obama’s first inaugural parade, said they won’t be marching in the Jan. 20 event. “We were a bit horrified to hear of the invitation,” said Shirley Ferrill of Fairfield, Alabama, a member of Talla...

  • How Worland's grocery stores have changed

    John Davis, Columnist|Jan 3, 2017

I’ve noticed how Worland’s grocery stores have changed during my lifetime, but only recently have I looked more closely at this change and realized how extensive it has been. Today, the great majority of the grocery needs of our town are met by two large stores, IGA and Blair’s, although there are three or four convenience stores. But during the 1950s, there were grocery stores of all sizes all over the town. The only large grocery store I remember from the 1950s was the Safeway store, which was located in the building now occupied by Ace H...

    Scott Nulph, WyoSports|Jan 3, 2017

LARAMIE – When a basketball team is playing with as much defensive confidence as the University of Wyoming women's team, even when things break down occasionally there's little panic. The Cowgirls dominated UNLV on Saturday in their Mountain West home opener 79-57 at Arena-Auditorium, building a double-digit lead in the first quarter and leading by 20 at halftime. Yet twice in the second half – at the beginning of the third and fourth quarters – UNLV made serious runs against UW, pulling withi...

  • Kitty litter helps Wyoming bentonite past drilling slump

    Jan 3, 2017

CHEYENNE (AP) — The market for a peculiar type of clay is looking up thanks to improved prospects for oil and gas drilling and to cat owners who use the stuff to soak up their pets’ business. Over 90 percent of all bentonite mined in the U.S. and almost half worldwide comes from beds of ancient volcanic ash in Wyoming. Some call bentonite the mineral of 1,000 uses: It clarifies wine and other alcoholic beverages, forms an impervious liner to keep landfills from leaking, removes ink during paper recycling, and goes into a slew of hom...

The Park County Sheriff Office says neighbors had brought Sperry extra food, water and firewood in the days before his death.
