  • Walking in Worland

    John Davis|Mar 1, 2016

I like to walk. We’ve always lived close to downtown Worland and so I developed habits of walking to the grocery store, to my office, and to the courthouse, bank, post office, etc. Unless a trip is more than, say, seven or eight blocks, I walk. And when I walk somewhere I look for changes. Worland’s downtown alters quite a bit, sometimes very rapidly, and I can always find some new feature I hadn’t noticed before. But more interesting to me are the patterns in the residential areas close to downtown. I think I’ve mentioned before that until s...

  • Back-to-back

    Sisco Molina, Sports Editor|Mar 1, 2016

CASPER – At around 7 p.m. on Saturday, Worland senior Austin Beck was about to wrestle for his second consecutive 220-pound title at the Class 3A Wyoming High School State Wrestling Championships. He paced the Casper Events Center floor, occasionally glancing over to watch whichever championship match was going on. He looked on as his teammate JD Nelson dropped a tough 5-4 decision in the 160-pound title match. A short time later, it was his other teammate Wade Goncalves who was getting his h...

    Tesia Galvan, Staff Writer|Mar 1, 2016

WORLAND - One of two unrelated fires destroyed a home Sunday evening on Thorson Road. The fires were extinguished Sunday afternoon and evening by the Worland Fire Department. Worland Fire Chief Chris Kocher said the department was paged out a little after 9 p.m. and by the time they got there the fire was completely engulfed. "The trailer home was lost," Kocher said. The property was owned by Tanner Allen, and the tenants were Elijah and Ethan Bowen. According to a GoFundMe page created by...

  • IRS phone scams on the rise in Washakie County

    Tesia Galvan, Staff Writer|Mar 1, 2016

WORLAND — With tax season in full swing, several Worland residents have called the Washakie County Law Enforcement Center making complaints of a fraudulent Internal Revenue Service phone scam. The fraudulent callers claim to be with the IRS and make accusations of a file or lawsuit against residents, and have the same message: pay money or get arrested by local law enforcement. Washakie County Sheriff Steve Rakness said these claims are completely false. “The IRS does not call you on the phone to tell you that. They’re going to corre...

  • Reports: Tom Brady agrees to 2-year contract extension

    Mar 1, 2016

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Tom Brady reportedly has agreed to a two-year contract extension with the New England Patriots. The deal will significantly lessen Brady’s salary cap hit for 2016, which would have been about $15 million. He was due to make $9 million next season, plus a $6 million bonus, and $10 million in salary in 2017. Brady, 38, has often redone his contract to help the Patriots’ cap situation. The four-time Super Bowl champion has said he plans to play well into his 40s. The extension would allow him to do so in New England. The a...

  • Baseball toughens up on chew as sky darkens for big dippers

    Mar 1, 2016

(AP) — Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz spit some chew into a bottle at his locker, then dipped into the latest notice from baseball. Big leaguers are now getting a written reminder that smokeless tobacco is banned at stadiums in Boston, San Francisco and Los Angeles. One-page letters are being put in clubhouse stalls throughout spring training, where there is no prohibition. The notes come jointly from Major League Baseball and the players’ union. So, will Buchholz quit? “That’ll probably happen,” he said. “If you get reprimanded for something, t...
