  • Karla's Kolumn

    Karla Pomeroy, Editor|May 14, 2016

Last week Worland schools conducted the annual “Life R U Ready?” program for eighth graders to help them realize the choices they make have consequences. They examined relationship choices — being in a bad or unhealthy relationship, or getting pregnant, drunk driving, distracted driving, choices where you may end up in court and/or jail and others. Just as the eighth graders will be faced with many decisions as they enter high school, our high school and college graduates will be faced with many choices, some coming quickly and some in the d...

  • The daily fantasy sports conundrum

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|May 14, 2016

The first U.S. Congressional hearing on daily fantasy sports (DFS) sports took place this past week. Officially labeled "Daily Fantasy Sports: Issues and Perspectives" the hearing was a complete waste of time. Shocking, right? The one effective part of the hearing was reigniting the debate around the legality of DFS and sports gambling as a whole. Quickly, DFS operates like so, you pay an entry fee into a contest that can range anywhere from 50 cents to $1,300. You select from a pool of actual...

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|May 14, 2016

LANDER - The Best of the Best meet brought, well, the best of the best athletes from each middle school track team to compete in the final meet of the season Thursday afternoon. Amongst the state's top competition, the Worland Middle School track team ended their season strongly with multiple top-placed finishes. Eighth grader Kate Wassum swept the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, seventh graders Carmyn Buckman (discus), Cole Harmon (high jump) and Taylor Pierce all took first place in their...

City Clerk Tracy Glanz said four others took out applications but she doesn’t know what for, and the applications have not been returned. Eight city council members and one county commissioner have expiring terms in December. If any interested parties would like to run for city council or county com...

For the 800-meter race Chance Martello finished first while teammate Gabe Webster finished eighth. • Homeland Security Director moves on

    Tesia Galvan, Staff Writer|May 14, 2016

WORLAND – Like many people, previous Washakie County Homeland Security Director Kimball Croft had several other jobs before finding his passion. Before finding his passion in Homeland Security and emergency management, Croft worked as a school administrator, a research analyst and in taxes. The jump from education to analyst to Homeland Security was a simple one because when it comes down to the bare bones of the job, the work isn't that different. "There wasn't much difference than being an a...

  • Don't meddle in Wyoming on transgender issue

    May 14, 2016

CHEYENNE (AP) — Wyoming education superintendent Jillian Balow says the federal government shouldn’t tell state educators how to handle sensitive issues such as which restrooms transgender students should use. The Obama administration on Friday told school districts nationwide to allow transgender students to use the restrooms and locker rooms corresponding to their gender identity. That’s after the Justice Department and North Carolina sued each other over a law in that state requiring students to use the restroom that corresponds to the s...

  • Whatever happened to Wyoming's Libertarians?

    Marcus Huff, Staff Writer|May 14, 2016

CHEYENNE – Founded by a handful of activists in Colorado in 1971, the Libertarian Party has become the third-largest political party in the United States, and the most vocal of the third party options. In 2012, Libertarian presidential candidate and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson secured 1 percent of the national vote, a feat unheard of in Libertarian history. While Wyoming has 1,023 registered Libertarians (up from 939 in 2015), the notable public impact is miniscule. The state party website hasn’t been updated in four years, the stat...
