  • Karla's Kolumn: Cowboys and firefighters

    Karla Pomeroy, Editor|Jul 14, 2018

Much the same way a kneeling NFL player turned many U.S. citizens into strong, outspoken American patriots, a simple slogan change by the University of Wyoming turned many a Wyomingite into strong, outspoken cowboys this week. The slogan "The World Needs More Cowboys" has caused concern among some at the university who called the slogan racist, sexist and counterproductive to attracting students and faculty from outside Wyoming. As a Wyoming native and University of Wyoming alum (1990) I read...

  • National attention prompts early launch of UW campaign

Jeff Victor, Laramie Boomerang Via Wyoming News Exchange|Jul 14, 2018

LARAMIE - When the University of Wyoming decided on a new marketing slogan - one element of a $500,000 campaign to boost enrollment - it hoped to reach potential students across the country and inspire them to ask questions about UW. On that front, the campaign succeeded beyond its wildest expectations. During the Board of Trustees' meeting Thursday, the board voted to roll out the campaign ahead of schedule to capitalize on the national attention it was already gaining. "The last time I talked...

  • County valuation up from 2017

    Marcus Huff, Staff Writer|Jul 14, 2018

WORLAND – According to documents provided by the Washakie County Assessor’s Office, valuations for the county are up in 2018, due to a positive return of oil and gas money generated in the county over the last year. The Board of County Commissioners is expected to levy the requisite taxes, based on the valuation figures, in early August. A mill levy is the number of dollars a taxpayer must pay for every $1,000 of assessed value on real property. To calculate the property tax, the assessed value of the property is multiplied by the mill rat...

  • A nice start the summer

    David Watson, WyoSports|Jul 14, 2018

LARAMIE – Jordan Spears is used to having good – if not really good – rodeo seasons to hang his hat on. The bull rider from Redding, California, took a big leap to kick-starting the bulk of his summer schedule Wednesday when he was crowned the 78th annual Laramie Jubilee Days Mr. T Xtreme Bull Riding champion. "My job is to come here, stay on my bull and let everything settle where it settles," Spears said. "That's why I travel up and down the road – to perform my best every time and I'm hap...

  • Hear Me Out...My first 'get off my lawn' take

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jul 14, 2018

It was bound to happen, a day was going to come when I read a story and my inner curmudgeon would be unleashed like that of a rage-fueled Norse god, leading me to write my first "get off my lawn" or "old man yells at could" take. But unlike most in sports media who want to deny or fight that time and pop culture is passing them by, I'm leaning into it. I am genuinely excited about this and even though I'm only 30, I've started to notice that pop culture has been pulling further and further...
