  • Karla's Kolumn: Time to make fairgrounds, arena, a priority

    Karla Pomeroy, Editor|Aug 12, 2017

Last week I wrote about life lessons I learned at area county fairs. Well I learned something else, or rather came to a realization. I realize that the Washakie County Commissioners have some decisions to make regarding the fairgrounds. I’ve spent the most time this summer on the fairgrounds, compared to the two previous fairs and the 2.5 years I’ve been here. This year at the demolition derby, I attempted to sit in the grandstands to photograph. I have done this in Big Horn County for a number of years. But, there’s a problem. First is the d...

  • US stocks snap 3-day losing streak in roller coaster week

    Associated Press|Aug 12, 2017

Gains among technology companies helped snap a three-day losing streak for U.S. stocks Friday, though the market ended with its worst weekly loss since March. The modest rebound came at the end of a turbulent week on Wall Street as escalating tensions between the U.S. and North Korea rattled global markets. In the first four days of the week, the Standard & Poor’s 500 index swung from marking its latest record high to posting its biggest single-day drop in nearly three months. The negative headlines provided many investors with an o...

  • Adding more medals to the collection

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Aug 12, 2017

WORLAND - The Chopper CrossFit powerlifting team has the means to begin building their own Iron Throne from the hit HBO show "Game of Thrones", but rather than using the swords of vanquished foes, Chopper can build theirs from the medals they've won from powerlifting competitions. Traveling to Laramie for the Wyoming State and Mountain West Regional powerlifting meet on June 17, the Chopper team, consisting of Randall Homan (Chopper CrossFit owner), Anna Fetter, Sydnee Jameson, Alejandra Rice...

  • Hear me out...(Funny/catchy headline)

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Aug 12, 2017

As a seasoned media vet (OK, I’ve only been in the industry for little over a year but roll with me on this) I’ve noticed that deciding on a headline for your piece is an artform. You want a headline that accurately fits your story, yet one that grabs the attention of the readers. That way, you know, they read your story. It’s a little tough because if you’re headline puts people to sleep, chances are your story isn’t getting read. But go too strong with your headline and sensationalize it, you’re drifting into the dreaded clickbait t...

  • NOT REAL NEWS: A look at what didn't happen this week

    Associated Press|Aug 12, 2017

A roundup of some of the most popular, but completely untrue, headlines of the week. None of these stories are legit, even though they were shared widely on social media. The Associated Press checked these out; here are the real facts: NOT REAL: John McCain Says He ‘Accidentally’ Voted No On Healthcare Repeal THE FACTS: The Republican senator from Arizona has expressed no regrets over his dramatic vote last month that sank a GOP effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act, despite this story shared by americannews88.com. The 80-year-old McC...

  • Federal disaster declaration aids government entities only

    Karla Pomeroy, Editor|Aug 12, 2017

The disaster declaration by President Donald J. Trump offering federal assistance from recent flooding does not include individuals or corporations. Washakie County Homeland Security and Emergency Management Director Jeff Schweighart said he has been working with the Office of Homeland Security for assistance for snowmelt runoff that began in April. “From April until June Washakie County was in alert status,” Schweighart said in an earlier interview, noting that the river crested at 11.66 feet in June, beating the previous recorded record of 10...

  • Nowoodstock keeps rockin' the Big Horns

    Marcus Huff, Staff Writer|Aug 12, 2017

TEN SLEEP – What began as an acoustic jam session for Wyoming musicians in 1999 has grown into an annual event that continues this weekend in Ten Sleep, home of the Nowoodstock music festival. Back in 1999, local musicians met regularly at the Per Cup coffee shop, clanging out bluegrass and western tunes to an audience of entertainment-starved locals and the occasional pack of town dogs. After more than a few successful get-togethers, an idea was born: a music festival. In 2000, Per Cup owner J...
