  • Walking with Worland wildlife

    John Davis, Columnist|Nov 1, 2016

I like to take walks from my home at Sixth and Culbertson to Worland’s River View Memorial Gardens. It’s a pleasant trek, with great views of the Big Horns, and I like to commune with my relatives buried in the cemetery (my grandmother, three aunts, two uncles, father and mother are all up there). But probably the most interesting aspect of the walk is how much wildlife I see. The other day I came out of my house and noticed movement on the roof. It was a squirrel and as I watched it took a run from the roof to a flimsy branch. When the squ...

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks were mostly unchanged on Monday, despite some positive economic data and a raft of big new merger announcements over the weekend. • Competition promotes seat belt usage

    Tracie Mitchell, Staff Writer|Nov 1, 2016

WORLAND – Hot Springs County High School won the Injury Prevention Resources’ Battle of the Belts, competing against Worland High School. The winning school will have bragging rights for two years before the competition between the two schools occurs again. “The neat part is that it’s not just bragging rights for one year, like you have in most sports rivalries, but for this one they get two years bragging rights. So every other year they get to defend the belt,” Injury Prevention Resources Safety Education Coordinator Tom Cunningham said. The...

CHEYENNE (AP) — A Wyoming man accused of manslaughter in the death of a missing 13-month-old boy allowed him to be exposed to methamphetamine before the boy died, prosecutors charge. A criminal complaint released Monday charges Logan Hunter Rogers, 23, of Cheyenne with involuntary manslaughter and child endangering with a controlled substance in the death of Silas Anthony Ojeda of Cheyenne. Wyoming authorities plan to start searching a landfill in Ault, Colorado, for Ojeda’s body on Tuesday. Capt. Linda Gesell of the Laramie County She...

  • New rules possible for Wyoming oil, gas wastewater cleanup

    Nov 1, 2016

CHEYENNE (AP) — Wyoming environmental regulators are considering possibility of new rules on bonding to avoid having to spend state money to clean up abandoned oil and gas wastewater facilities. The cost would run into several million dollars should the state have to remediate several facilities. In 2013, the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality spent $740,000 to clean up an abandoned commercial oilfield wastewater disposal facility in Sublette County. Such facilities — there are 35 in Wyoming — collect and treat millions of gallo...

  • The Stockgrower's Bank Robbery: 40 years ago today

    Marcus Huff, Staff Writer|Nov 1, 2016

WORLAND – Gary Hailfinger arrived in Worland in the fall of 1976, stepping off a Greyhound bus and taking up residence at the Washakie Hotel, with only a few items in his possession, and a virtual stranger to the inhabitants of the small northern Wyoming town. A Vietnam War veteran originally from Fort Worth, Texas, Hailfinger made only a small impression during his month-long stay in Worland. Hotel maids remarked that he seemed strange and lingered over them when they cleaned his room, but neve...

GILLETTE - With only a few events left during the Wyoming 3A Girls Swimming State Meet the Worland Lady Warriors swim team needed a late push and tremendous efforts to claim their third-place finish Saturday afternoon. "I felt confident we would take third. I didn't think Riverton would have enough to stay ahead of us even though they were leading us most of the time," said WHS girls swimming coach Mike Blissett. Going into the final event of the day the 400-yard freestyle, Worland trailed...
