After more than a year of working on four health care facilities in Wyoming, the Wyoming Task Force on Department of Health Facilities finally ruled out one option for the Wyoming Retirement Center, the option to close the facility entirely. The future of the state facility in Basin is still up in the air and will be until a decision from the Wyoming Legislature, which could come during the 2016 budget session. Still on the table for the task force is privatizing the facility. They will be meeting in Cheyenne in January to finalize a...

WORLAND – Building a Gingerbread house is something that many families do together during the Christmas season. The Friends of the Worland Library would like people to showcase their building skills this year for the 5th annual Gingerbread contest at the Washakie County Library located at 1019 Coburn Ave. in Worland. “This event fills the Worland Library with holiday spirit and a wonderful aroma! • While job growth lifts most of US economy, oil patch suffers

    Dec 5, 2015

WASHINGTON (AP) — The falling oil and gasoline prices that for months have coincided with strong U.S. hiring have helped most Americans. But they’ve come at a painful cost for workers in the energy and mining sector: 122,300 lost jobs in the past year. Even as workers nationwide are earning slightly more than they did a year ago, average wages have tumbled 1.5 percent to $26.72 an hour for energy production workers. The November jobs report that the government released Friday illustrated the divide between the broad economy and the ailing fos...

  • Big Jim and the Cowboy Bar

    Dec 5, 2015

MEETEETSE – “I probably shouldn’t be sitting with my back to the door,” Jim Blake said with a sly grin as he looked over his shoulder before submitting to an hour-long interview. “That’s how Hickok went out, but I’ve been shot twice, stabbed three times, and lost my eye to a shovel attack. I reckon whatever happens, happens.” Of all the Wyoming characters to walk through the doors of Meeteetse’s Cowboy Bar over the years, owner “Big Jim” Blake is probably the most colorful. The former...

  • Championship Bond

WORLAND – After Worland's state volleyball title in 1989, Duane Groshart – then Sports Editor of the Northern Wyoming Daily News – wrote, "It will be a long time before we see such a team again." It's easy to understand why. The team was nearly unbeatable that year, compiling a 23-1 record while capturing the school's third championship in a four-year span. Unbeknownst at the time, though, was exactly how long it would take before Worland's volleyball team would hoist another trophy. "A long...
