Shoppers in Worland Sunday found the Reese & Ray’s IGA store closed with a notice “Closed until further notice” posted on the doors. Now the signs just say closed but the liquor store remains open. Yes, one more business closing is a heartbreaker for the community but it is not the end of Worland. Shopko has been closed for several months and we’ve seen stores increase their product lines and one new gift shop open (Classy Reinventions & Gifts, with more on that business next week). Worland Pharmacy is set to open this month thanks to the eff...
A week ago on Wednesday, Sept. 4, my husband, Alan and I, celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary. Last week we had a story of a couple married 70 years and this week we have one with a couple married 50 years. What's the secret to a long marriage? Is 20 years today considered a long marriage? To these questions I have no answer. I can only say that before getting married I got some advice from my sister and a dear elderly woman in our church. My sister said to make sure that we were on the...
It seems that every time you read the news, via newspaper or internet, or listen to the news, another law enforcement officer has been attacked, shot or killed. I don't understand why law enforcement has become the enemy. Last I knew the police are here to protect us and should be given the utmost respect because not only do they put their lives on the line every day for us, but they also take the chance of having their family's lives thrown into disarray if something were to happen to them....
There are a lot of unpleasant things that I have experienced in my lifetime; losing a good friend to suicide when I was a teenager, the death of all but one of my grandparents, abusive relationships, having my first grandchild born premature at 27 weeks and not knowing if he would live or die (he lived), dealing with cancer at the age of 30 and many more unpleasant events, but never has an experience bothered me as much as the experience of covering a sexual molestation trial. After the first day of the trial, I was left reeling from the testim...
Reading is an important part of everyone's life. We read every day, whether it is traffic signs, school books, your music playlist, the guide on your TV, Facebook memes, tweets, or, of course, the newspaper. But social media, instant messaging and texting has highlighted a problem that can happen in written messages – the tone in which the writer, texter, typist, means to convey the message. When someone speaks to you, whether in person or on the phone, you know their tone. I'm sure you've h...
I remember growing up and not understanding things and being told by family, teachers and friends that I would understand when I got older, but here I am 47 years old and I find myself more confused now than when I was a child. The other day, my husband and I were traveling over the Big Horns, going from Buffalo to Ten Sleep. It was a beautiful day and the sights were amazing. In front of us were two campers going under the 65 miles per hour speed limit and cars were backing up behind them. The...
Weeks after two mass shootings that left 32 innocent people dead in Texas and Ohio, people are still pointing fingers and finding someone or something to blame. Just like with guns and gun control, when it comes to mental health and mass shootings there are several sides. For me, I believe every shooter is mentally unhealthy. Does that mean every one of them has been specifically diagnosed with a mental illness? No. The reason I believe this is because no one who is mentally healthy would...
The other day I saw an incident with a child riding their bicycle that chilled me to the bone and caused me to speak with both the Washakie County Sheriff's Office and the Worland Police Department about bicycle safety and what to parents should know about bicycle safety. I was at a four-way stop, with a car stopped at each stop sign and a little girl, maybe 8-10 years old and not wearing a helmet or pads, was riding her bike on the sidewalk. With all four cars stopped the child ran the stop sig...
"The ultimate human experience." A trailer from the Universal Pictures movie "The Hunt," that was set to be released next month describes the scenario where rich elitists get to hunt 12 Midwest humans (including one from Wyoming) in what was described in the trailer as "the ultimate human experience." After some public backlash last week, producers have pulled the release of the movie at this time. Several media reports stated the movie showed Trump supporters being hunted although it was not...
I first arrived in Ten Sleep, Wyoming, from Vermont, in July of 1997 and I was amazed by the people here, their old fashioned morals and willingness to help each other ... for no pay. Over the years I have bragged about the Wyoming way of life to everyone and anyone. I couldn't believe that people would get together and brand calves for no pay other than a job well done and a good meal. I couldn't believe how people banded together, for no pay, to help a family who had a fire or to make sure...
It was a horrific weekend in America with 31 people killed, dozens injured by mass killers in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. The shootings were less than 13 hours apart and less than a week from when another killer shot three and injuring more than a dozen more. 34 people killed 3 shooters 19, 21, 24, were the ages of the shooters 0 realistic attainable solutions offered There are so many topics to cover and issues to address from this weekend's horrific events that it is hard to know where...
Coming up with a 52 topics in a year can be difficult at times. OK, let's be honest, coming up with the topics is easy, putting them together in a column or editorial in a way that makes sense is not. This week I have about three or four column ideas running through my head, all of them need a little research before putting all my thoughts down on paper. So this week, in the midst of fair week our readers get some random thoughts. FAIR I was going to share some of my favorite fair memories but...
I used to think it was impossible for kids to grow up into what they wanted to be. It wasn't until I had been in my old bedroom, packing boxes when I came across a composition notebook from fourth grade. One of the journal entries was "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Turns out, I fulfilled my 9-year-old self's aspirations to become a journalist. My freshman year of high school, Ten Sleep had an event for their high school students similar to job shadowing. I had an "interview" with a...
Next week is a busy time in the southern part of the Big Horn Basin. As always there are three county fairs going on, Big Horn County Fair in Basin, Hot Springs County Fair in Thermopolis, and, of course, the Washakie County Fair right here in Worland. The Hot Springs and Washakie County fairs get underway Saturday with their respective horse shows. Big Horn County kicks things off this Friday with their dog show and then all the other events and exhibits are next week. Fair week starts a busy time as we head toward summer’s end. For small c...
There are many major events in recent history that I can say I remember where I was — 9/11 of course is the most obvious; the Challenger; President Ronald Reagan’s attempted assassination. But 50 years ago this Saturday was the historic landing on the moon and I can honestly say I do not know where I was. At the age of 1 and 1 month, I can speculate I was causing my parents and siblings havoc, but that is pure speculation from what I know about 1-year-olds. I may have been trying to take a nap. I say trying because my siblings liked to tor...
The celebration of the birth of our nation and the declaration of our independence and our freedom was marred by several events last week. In 1776, 243 years ago, we declared our freedom from England’s tyranny. But that fact has seemed to have gotten lost in all the hate rhetoric spewing forth across the country as of late. Nike pulled shoes with the Betsy Ross flag on the heel because Colin Kaepernick was offended. If I was as easily offended as Kaepernick and his supporters I would have been offended as a woman on his attack on Betsy Ross. B...
Common sense safety. If it is common sense you think the safety tips would go without having to be said, but that’s not the case, that’s why on your blow dryer it says not to immerse in water. Common sense tells us that would be a bad idea but obviously someone did it, thus the need for a warning. Many things come with common sense warnings that are not heeded by users. This week with the Fourth of July celebration starting tomorrow many people will be lighting off a plethora of fireworks. Fireworks are not toys. Fireworks are not to be use...
Independence Day is a week from today I know, you're thinking why write something a week early. Well two reasons. One, I've had writer's block for this space and now that is 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday night and another AGT auditions episode is over I finally settled on a topic, or as you'll see a few topics if I keep your attention to the end. By the way, in my opinion AGT has been a bit disappointing this year. There are still decisions by the judges that make me shake my head and wonder what they...
So many people in this world are fighting diseases that no one knows about. The checker girl the other day who didn't smile at your joke, the waiter who kept forgetting condiments, the man who forgot to return your call, the lady who called you a second time for the same thing, all may be fighting an illness that can't be seen to the naked eye, but they are fighting and fighting hard. I personally fight everyday with fibromyalgia. I know what it is like to wake up in the morning, feeling like I...
Attention Worland Ward 3 residents now is your chance. There is an opening on the city council following the resignation of Melissa Rivera who is moving due to an employment opportunity. Letters of interest are being accepted through July 31. This is your chance to be involved in the community and help shape the future of Worland. In recent years there has been a lack of interest for council positions, especially in Ward 3. Last year two seats were vacated and there were no filings for the seats. Write-in nominations were accepted following...
What does life after Shopko look like? Shopko closed last month in Worland. Shopko stores have closed around the Big Horn Basin and across the state. Worland has been proactive in reacting to the closure, not allowing one big box chain store closing define us or determine our future. Local economic development groups in all four Big Horn Basin Shopko communities worked with the Wyoming Business Council and the National Main Street Center on conducting a study and survey for “life after Shopko.” A webinar last Wednesday provided insight and ana...
This weekend, I had the honor of experiencing something new for myself and plenty of others. Though I have known this about myself since the eighth grade, this weekend, I learned that this isn't something I need to hide; at least, not anymore. June is known for plenty of things, but, most significant to me and many, many others, June is known as National Gay Pride month. I hid who I am from most people for years, only coming out to a few family members, but mostly close friends. Casper PRIDE is...
I'm not a weather watcher. What I mean is I don't really look ahead to see what the weather will be like tomorrow or the weekend or next week. It doesn't matter the season. I wake up, check the temperature and decide what to wear. My husband, who depends on good weather for his business, does watch the weather, especially in the spring and summer. Weather is a funny thing. Everyone loves to talk about. No one agrees on it. Some love snow others do not. Some love the heat, others the cold. Some...
There was much to be thankful for on Monday, including that the American Legion Floyd Minch Post 44 moved the annual Memorial Day Ceremonies inside the Post due to the rain and the saturated ground at Riverview Memorial Gardens Cemetery. During the ceremonies, Col. E. Steven Alkire, director of Joint Staff for the Wyoming National Guard, spoke about the two servicemen for whom the Worland National Guard Armory is named — Lt. Richard L. Friedlund and PFC Fred Garcia. Both served with honor for the 2-300th Field Artillery C-Battery, the h...
The school year draws to a close this week and there's been much celebration in Worland the past week with graduation, two-time state boys soccer champions and Kait Wassum winning two track titles. Ten Sleep also had much to celebrate with graduation and Kelli Holiday finishing her career with 14 championship medals in track. Whether an athlete, artist, musician, academician, I offer a few more final tips to our graduates. First, it is OK to make mistakes. No, really it is. I have made a few in...
