    Scott Nulph, Wyosports|Sep 1, 2016

LARAMIE – University of Wyoming cross-country coach Bryan Berryhill isn't shy about saying where he thinks his men's and women's teams are as the 2016 season begins this weekend. "I think they're two different teams," Berryhill said. "The women's team is one of the best groups I've been able to work with. I think there's got to be big expectations. The men's team is coming off a really good year, one of the best years in program history, but we lost three of our top five runners. We're going t...

  • Bohl feels Cowboys are playing more than just a team in opener

    Robert Gagliardi, WyoSports|Aug 30, 2016

LARAMIE — Craig Bohl doesn’t see Northern Illinois as a football team. The third-year University of Wyoming football coach sees the Cowboys’ season-opening foe Saturday night as much more than that. “When you’re talking about Northern Illinois, you’re talking about a program,” said Bohl during his weekly news conference Monday. “In the last 10 years they’re in the top five (nationally) in winning percentage.” Northern Illinois, a member of the Mid-American Conference, has done most of its winning over the last half of the last decade. Over the...

  • Hear me out...Fearless, reckless, undaunting, hasty predictions for the 2016-2017 NFL season

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Aug 27, 2016

We're 12 days away from the NFL season beginning and it's that time of the year every fan base is riding high on optimism and the playoffs seem plausible. And I'm here to crush that optimism with my very first NFL preview. Honestly it's a dream come true I've always wanted to roast the other 31 NFL teams that aren't my favorite team. So it's time to set my grievances with the owners and Roger Goodell and his goons aside. Unlike most analysts, sports editors or NFL experts I've done very minimal...

LARAMIE – University of Wyoming volleyball players will likely be carrying a little something extra in their travels this weekend as they open the 2016 season at the Purdue Mortar Board Invitational. Each will likely be carrying a chip with them from a year ago. And they'll likely have that chip firmly on their shoulders throughout this fall. The Cowgirls put together one of the top seasons in UW history in 2015, going 23-7 overall and 13-5 in the Mountain West. Wyoming beat nationally ranked O...

  • WHS AD settling in

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Aug 25, 2016

WORLAND - Worland High School teacher Mark Mortimer has hit the ground running in his new position as the activities director of WHS. In the spring Mortimer was named to the position after previous AD Bruce Miller accepted the West Side Elementary principal job. Becoming the WHS AD also meant Mortimer would have to step down as girls basketball coach, fresh off a 3A championship. While he's no longer coaching basketball, which he's done at the varsity level for 13 years, Mortimer has enjoyed...

  • Injuries mean opportunities for UW receivers, secondary guys

    Robert Gagliardi, Wyosports|Aug 24, 2016

LARAMIE - Craig Bohl described it as taking lemons and making lemonade out of them. The third-year University of Wyoming football coach referred to the extra practice reps several guys at wide receiver and in the defensive secondary have received in fall camp due to minor injuries to some projected starters. UW's top two wide receivers - seniors Tanner Gentry and Jake Maulhardt - have dealt with hamstring strains for much of camp. Same can be said for sophomore free safety Andrew Wingard and jun...

  • Cowboys continue to build toward opener

    Scott Nulph, Wyosports|Aug 23, 2016

The University of Wyoming football team walked off War Memorial on Saturday exactly two weeks from the start of the regular season. Where the Cowboys are in terms of improvement following last year's 2-10 season still remains a question mark with the home opener looming at 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 3 against Northern Illinois. "Until you get in the middle of the first half of the first game you don't get to see where you're at," Cowboys coach Craig Bohl said. "We're encouraged with more guys and more...

  • Break time is over; Chase concerns start at Bristol

    Aug 20, 2016

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) — Break time is over. With four races left in the Sprint Cup regular season, the push for NASCAR’s playoffs revs up at Bristol Motor Speedway with the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race on Saturday night. Sprint Cup drivers got a final week off last weekend and now race uninterrupted through the season-ender in Florida on Nov. 20. The immediate concern for most of those in the garage is making the 16-team Chase field — either insiders shoring up a dicey spot on the end of the grid or outsiders making a last-ditch charge to get i...

  • Making the grade

    Robert Gagliardi, WyoSports|Aug 20, 2016

LARAMIE — The summer was all about work and studying for Austin Conway. Conway joined the University of Wyoming football team as a wide receiver in the spring. He redshirted as freshman as a point guard for the men’s basketball team. The 5-foot-10, 173-pound Conway impressed third-year coach Craig Bohl during spring drills, but Conway knew he had a lot of work to do to get ready for fall camp in August. That work included spending time in the weight room to get bigger, faster and stronger. Conway added nearly 10 pounds of muscle. It also inc...

    Robert Gagliardi, WyoSports|Aug 19, 2016

LARAMIE - Prior to Nico Evans coming to the University of Wyoming to play football, he never had hamstring injuries. The Los Angeles running back redshirted as a freshman in 2014 with the Cowboys, and still had no hamstring issues. But in the spring of 2015 Evans injured his hamstring. He also had the same injury when fall camp started that year. "It slowed me down and lot and I couldn't prove what I could do," Evans said. Evans played in 10 games last season and had 14 carries for 56 yards. He...

  • Nzeocha in line to make his final season a good one for Pokes

    Robert Gagliardi, WyoSports|Aug 18, 2016

LARAMIE — The time is now for Eric Nzeocha. The University of Wyoming middle linebacker is a senior, and for the first time in his UW career, Nzeocha isn’t switching positions. Nzeocha came to UW in 2012 from Neusitz, Germany, as a wide receiver. After he redshirted as a freshman, Nzeocha played on special teams in 2013. The following year, when coach Craig Bohl was hired, Nzeocha moved to tight end. Last season, Nzeocha was moved to middle linebacker and started five of the first seven games. He recorded 35 tackles and one tackle for loss. Now...

  • Bolt says tight schedule slowed down 100-meter sprinters

    Aug 16, 2016

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Usain Bolt rarely complains about going too fast. After the rushed road to Sunday night’s 100-meter final, he had to make an exception. Faced with a turnaround time of barely over an hour between the semifinal and final, Bolt had trouble gearing up to be at his best for the marquee event of the Olympics. He won his record-setting third straight gold medal , but his post-race comments were tinged with slams about the scheduling. “I don’t know who decided that,” Bolt said. “It was really stupid. So, that’s why the race was...

  • Possibility turning into reality for UW's Ebbesen

    Robert Gagliardi, WyoSports|Aug 16, 2016

LARAMIE – In the spring, there was the possibility. Less than week into fall camp, all signs indicate it's going to become reality for Du'Ryan Ebbesen. Ebbesen, a fifth-year senior walk-on, is slated to be the starting center when the University of Wyoming opens its 2016 season Sept. 3 at home against Northern Illinois. "I wouldn't say he's dominant, but he's holding his own," third-year UW coach Craig Bohl said. "Du'Ryan is showing he's a guy we can count on." Ebbesen is from St. Croix in t...

Finley’s first throw of the day measured 198 feet, 3.25 inches (60.43 meters), about 10 feet under his best throw of the preliminary round. He fouled on his second attempt, throwing the implement into the netting surrounding the ring. Finley bounced back on his third...
