CASPER – Before the weekend, it had been 26 years since Worland's volleyball team last won a state championship – last hoisting the trophy in 1989. For perspective, the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 song of the year was "Look Away" by Chicago. Also in 1989, George H. W. Bush was in his first year as President of the United States, Nintendo first started selling the Game Boy in Japan, the first episode of "The Simpsons" aired on television and the average cost of one gallon of gas was 97 cents. Nee...
CASPER – The last time the Worland volleyball team made it to the state championship game, most of the members of this year's team weren't even born yet. The drought is now over as the Lady Warriors defeated Buffalo in five games 18-25, 25-19, 25-23, 21-25 and 15-5. It was a back and forth affair through the first four games, but Worland imposed its will on Buffalo in the final game - leaving no doubt as it picked up its third win over Buffalo this season. "We've done it all year against B...
CASPER – One match down, two more to go. Worland advanced to the semifinals of the Wyoming State High School Class 3A Volleyball Championships on Friday with a four-game win over Powell at the Casper Events Center. It was a great start to the weekend, especially since a handful of girls had never played at the state tournament before. Once Thursday's match was over, though, the Lady Warriors certainly looked like they belonged there. "I think the monkey's off of our back now. Half of our team h...

Today, 32 total teams scattered all across Wyoming will converge in Casper. By Saturday, only four will be left standing – seeing all of their hard work pay off for the ultimate prize. The Lady Warriors will be one of those 32 teams in the field and among the eight from Wyoming's 3A classification, entering as the No. 2...
LARAMIE – Brian Hill looks forward to Thursdays. That's when the University of Wyoming sophomore running back says his body bounces back from the hits he takes during games from the previous week. "I'm sore every week," Hill said with a laugh. "I go through practice with my body hurting all week until Thursday." Hill said it's "just soreness, with a few nicks and bruises after games." He also said the level of soreness is about the same from week-to-week. UW (1-8 overall, 1-4 Mountain West) p...
GILLETTE – The Lady Warriors made history in the state pool on Friday, swimming to a second-place finish in the team standings – behind only Jackson that won its fourth championship in a row. Saydria and Ellyse Russell both won individual state titles and were both on the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relay teams that captured state titles as well. "More than anything, I am just so proud of these girls to be able to make up the deficit coming in from prelims into finals knowing every swim we had...
DOUGLAS – Friday afternoon, the Lady Warriors were on the brink of losing their first match of the 3A East Regional Volleyball Tournament. By Friday evening, they were celebrating on the court after advancing to the championship game and also punching their ticket to the state tournament next weekend in Casper. Worland defeated Torrington (25-21, 22-25, 21-25, 25-22, 15-9) and Douglas (25-17, 19-25, 25-16, 25-17) on Friday at Douglas High School and now, a date with Rawlins awaits this evening for the 3A East title. “I think we finally jus...
The Lady Warriors may not have had their strongest performance on Thursday, but still did well enough to advance seven swimmers to the finals of the 3A State Swim Meet today in Gillette. According to Worland girls swimming coach Kim Wyman, the swims could have been better on Thursday. But the girls still put themselves in a position to be successful. And the room for improvement from top to bottom has her optimistic for her team’s chances. “We didn’t have our best day of swimming but we still had solid swims and placed ourselves in posit...
WORLAND – The biggest question ahead of Worland's game against Green River was senior running back Mauricio Caballero and if he would be able to take the field in his final home game as a Worland Warrior. Caballero sustained an injury to his left ankle in the first quarter against Star Valley on Oct. 16. It was significant enough to sideline Caballero for the rest of the game and it also held him out of practice for the first three days leading up to Green River. Forced to make a decision on whe...
LARAMIE – The numbers don't indicate it, nor does the team's record. But University of Wyoming football coaches and players like the direction the defense is heading in as the Cowboys enter the final four games of the season. "We've played better, and our numbers are trending that way," second-year coach Craig Bohl said. "We're getting more guys around the football; we're tackling better and allowing fewer big plays. "We're coming around. We've had to adjust some things, but our lineup is m...

BURLINGTON – Aaron Papich came into his first season as the head coach of the Burlington football team expecting to compete for a playoff spot in the 1A West. What he got was something entirely different. A lack of numbers forced Papich and the Huskies to forfeit seven of their eight games this year and they nearly had to cancel their season. But the fortitude and dedication shown by the players has kept the season alive. Numbers were low as the Huskies began fall practice in August – the first...
LARAMIE - Craig Bohl said the "mad shuffling" from earlier in the season is over. The second-year University of Wyoming football coach was talking about the constant lineup changes on the defense, especially at linebacker and in the secondary. Some was due to injury, suspension or a lack of production. As UW (1-6 overall, 1-2 Mountain West) comes off its first win of the season last week against Nevada and prepares for its next game at Boise State (5-2, 2-1) Saturday, there will be a couple of...
WORLAND – The Lady Warriors wrapped up the regular season in dominant fashion on Friday, defeating Cody by a wide margin in their last home meet of the season. "I'm elated with their performances tonight. They really finished hard and were able to send the seniors off with a win," Worland swim coach Kim Wyman said on Friday. "It's been really enjoyable to watch (these seniors) grow as individuals and as a group. They really have been strong leaders on the team." The meet started off with a b...
WORLAND — The Lady Warriors went on the road to Rawlins Thursday and came away with a 99-81 win, highlighted by a new state qualifying time from Felicia Aguilar in the 100 breast. Aguilar won the event with a time of 1:22.87 and now has qualified in her second event this year after doing so in the 100 back at Worland’s home meet on Sept. 26. Worland saw a small drop in its times, but overall coach Kim Wyman liked what she saw in the pool Thursday. “Overall, our times were not fast but we are being consistent in our approach to individual races...
BASIN – From 2012-14, the trend for the Riverside football team was the same every season. The Rebels beat the teams they're expected to beat and lose to the teams they're expected to lose to. They were able to sneak their way into the playoffs as the No. 4 seed the last two years, but were shut out on the road at Lusk both times – losing by a combined score of 123-0. But in 2015, that trend has changed. The Rebels have a 5-1 record through six weeks – the loss being a forfeit against 2A Greyb...
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) - Peppered with questions that made it seem like the unbeaten Broncos were winless - like whether he'd consider benching his five-time MVP quarterback to fix his sputtering offense - Gary Kubiak welcomed the reprieve. Are you able to enjoy this 5-0 start? he was asked. "You're damn right I am," Denver's first-year coach responded during a Monday news conference dominated by questions about an offense that's making too many mistakes and not enough yards or points. "I think...
WORLAND – The No. 2 ranked Lady Warriors put another check in the win column on Friday night as they took down Torrington in four games at home 25-12, 25-16, 23-25 and 25-17. Worland (14-7, 2-2 3A Northeast) used Friday's match to try some new things out offensively and for the most part, Worland volleyball coach Brittany Miller was pleased with the way her team executed despite learning it all in such a small time frame. "We put in the offense for the first time (Thursday) night in a walk throu...
WORLAND – In his first fall season at the helm, Worland golf coach Chad Rose was impressed with the improvement he saw from the Warriors in only a month's time. While all of the other fall sports continue on in to late October, golf's state culminating events took place over the final weekend of September. And in the short time the team was together, Rose saw some promising things. "Our kids started off shooting 480 on the boys' side and no girls' team score. Chassidi Garay joined us in week t...
LARAMIE – Jeremy Lieberman hopes his experience this summer leads to bigger and better things this season for the University of Wyoming men's basketball team. The 6-foot-1 sophomore guard spent a few weeks playing for the United States men's basketball team at the 2015 European Maccabi Games in Berlin, Germany. He helped the U.S. win the silver medal, as it went 4-1. "It was more than what I thought it would be," Lieberman said. "It was great, a lifetime opportunity. My teammates and coaching s...

The win brought Worland to a tie with the Lady Bison (13-5, 2-1 3A NE) at the top of the standings in the quadrant. The Lady Warriors knew it would take a good performance to knock off top-ranked Buffalo and they delivered one in front of an electric home crowd. "I think every win is a big win, but i...
WORLAND – This week's premier match in 3A volleyball will take place this evening in Warrior Gymnasium as the Lady Warriors play host to 3A Northeast foe Buffalo. A match of this magnitude without a doubt adds a lot o...
