  • Swimmers impress at home meet

    Sisco Molina, Sports Editor|Sep 29, 2015

WORLAND – Heading into the Lady Warrior Invite on Saturday, Worland swim coach Kim Wyman knew her team had a chance to win its home invite for the first time – but she knew the Lady Warriors would have their work cut out for them. So when the meet ended Saturday afternoon and the final scores came through, even she was a little surprised. Worland ended up winning its home meet, but by a much larger margin than anyone could have anticipated, finishing with a team score of 293 – 35 points ahead...

  • Thermopolis boys make it 2 in a row, repeat as 2A golf state champs

    Sisco Molina, Sports Editor|Sep 29, 2015

After building a 36-stroke lead at the conclusion of the first day of the 2A state golf tournament, the Thermopolis boys were able to extend that lead Saturday to run away with the team title and repeat as state champions. As a team, the Bobcats cut four strokes from their first day score – finishing with a two-day team total of 752. In second place was Sundance/Hulett 61 strokes behind with a two-day total of 813. “It was interesting feeling because they were all very happy that they won, but none of them were particularly happy with how the...

  • Lady Warriors win own Pre-Invite

    Sisco Molina, Sports Editor|Sep 26, 2015

WORLAND – The Lady Warriors started off their weekend with a small meet Friday, playing host to Douglas and Rawlins in the Lady Warrior Pre-Invite. It was treated as sort of a "fun meet" for the team according to coach Kim Wyman as the girls got to choose the events they swam in. And still Worland came away with a first place finish, winning with a team score of 148.5 while Rawlins was in second with 98 and Douglas third with 76.5 "I felt we had solid swims today. This week, we ended up u...

  • SENIOR MOMENT

    Sisco Molina, Sports Editor|Sep 25, 2015

WORLAND – It was only fitting that in Worland's only home meet of the season, a senior came away with a win. Chance Martello won the boys race for the Warriors, finishing in first place with a time of 17:19.66 which had him nearly seven seconds ahead of 4A Sheridan's Micah Sweeney in second place at 17:26.50. "As the race started to progress it started getting better and better for me ... I'm really happy that I won. This is only the second year running for me and I'm a senior and I got to w...

  • No. 3 Worland bounces back against Cody

    Sisco Molina, Sports Editor|Sep 23, 2015

WORLAND – After a letdown in Newcastle on Saturday, the No. 3 Lady Warriors were back on their home court Tuesday with a match against 3A West foe Cody. Worland started off strong but had a bit of a lull in the third game before ultimately putting away the Fillies in four games 25-20, 25-17, 15-25 and 27-25. "We needed a win tonight," Worland head coach Brittany Miller said after the four-game victory on Tuesday. "We needed to get better in transition and I felt we were a lot better t...

  • Pioneers fall to No. 2 Meeteetse 73-32

    Sisco Molina, Sports Editor|Sep 22, 2015

TEN SLEEP – The scoreboard may have read 73-32 in favor of Meeteetse at the end of the homecoming game Saturday, but Ten Sleep coach Andy Ray feels the score wasn't indicative of how well his team played against the No. 2 ranked team in the state. The Pioneers wanted to stop the big plays against the Longhorns and force them to sustain drives rather than give up long chunks of yardage. They also wanted to go out and make some big plays of their own. And for the most part, Ray was happy with w...

  • Warriors shifting focus to conference play

    Sisco Molina, Sports Editor|Sep 22, 2015

WORLAND – When the final buzzer sounded against Buffalo on Friday it signified not only the end of the game, but also the end of the nonconference schedule for the Warriors. After a 1-2 start against 3A East opponents in the first three games, Worland coach Todd Weber and the Warriors are ready to put those games behind them as they quickly shift their attention to conference play and the long haul of the season over the next five weeks. That's not to say the Warriors were without positives t...

  • DOWN GO THE CHAMPS

    Sisco Molina, Sports Editor|Sep 19, 2015

By Sisco Molina Sports Editor WORLAND – Look out 3A volleyball world, Worland is coming. The No. 3 Lady Warriors put the rest of the state on alert as they took down the defending 3A state champion, No. 2 Douglas at home in five games 22-25, 18-25, 25-17, 25-20 and 15-12. And with the win, a long drought against Douglas is suddenly over. "This was a huge win for our program. I don't know when the last time was that we beat Douglas," Miller said after the win Friday. After dropping the first t...

  • Worland netters to square off with state champs

    Sisco Molina, Sports Editor|Sep 18, 2015

WORLAND – After spending the last three weekends on the road for preseason tournaments, Worland will finally see its first action in the friendly confines of Warrior Gymnasium as it hosts defending 3A state champion Douglas today at 6 p.m. It's the popular match-up in 3A as both sides come into the weekend ranked in the WyoPreps Coaches and Media Poll – Douglas controlling the No. 2 spot with Worland right behind at No. 3. The two teams are also divisional foes in the 3A Northeast. All the gre...

  • Worland swimming back on the road

    Sisco Molina, Sports Editor|Sep 17, 2015

WORLAND – The Lady Warriors are set to take on another meet on the road as they travel to Powell once again for a dual. Worland was in Powell on Saturday with a number of other teams, but will be competing head-to-head with the Lady Panthers this time around. "I think we match up very well with them. We maintain about the same number of swimmers," Worland coach Kim Wyman said of Powell. "I'm kind of excited because it's the first time we've ever really matched up this well with them. "The g...

  • UW confident in starting true freshman Wallace at offensive tackle this week

    Robert Gagliardi, WyoSports|Sep 16, 2015

LARAMIE -- His size isn’t ideal, but the positives of the rest of his game are for University of Wyoming true freshman offensive tackle Zach Wallace. Wallace was named a starter this week at right tackle for UW’s game at Washington State Saturday. Wallace replaces sophomore Taylor Knestis, who suffered a concussion in the Cowboys’ 48-29 loss to Eastern Michigan last Saturday. Wallace came in when Knestis got hurt in the second half. He also played some in UW’s opener two weeks ago against North Dakota. At 6-foot-7, Wallace fits the mold of...

  • Coffman back at QB for Cowboys, Finley to start at corner

    Robert Gagliardi, WyoSports|Sep 15, 2015

LARAMIE -- There was significant movement on the University of Wyoming's two-deep roster heading into its third game of the season Saturday at Washington State. The most notable was redshirt senior Cameron Coffman being back at starting quarterback. Coffman missed last Saturday's 48-29 home loss to Eastern Michigan with a knee injury. UW coach Craig Bohl said during his weekly news conference Monday he expected Coffman to be at "full speed" when the Cowboys practiced later that day. "It's...

  • UW, Eastern Michigan both looking for bounce-back games

    Robert Gagliardi, WyoSports|Sep 12, 2015

LARAMIE – It's been said about the game of football for a long time, but in 13 years as a head coach, University of Wyoming coach Craig Bohl hasn't experienced it. They say teams make the most improvement between their first and second games. But in Bohl's experience, he said, "that hasn't been the case, because our teams have performed well in opening games." Bohl hopes there's a first time for everything. UW (0-1) struggled mightily in its season-opening 24-13 loss at home to North Dakota last...

  • Underclassmen shine in home meet Friday

    Sisco Molina, Sports Editor|Sep 12, 2015

WORLAND – The Lady Warriors continued their strong start to the season Friday as they hosted Buffalo, Newcastle and Powell in their first home meet of the season. The upperclassmen performed as well as expected and a few of the younger swimmers excelled as well in the small meet at the Worland Aquatic Center. "I saw some great things developing from some of our underclassmen," said Worland swim coach Kim Wyman. "This team has potential to surprise people at the culminating events by the s...

  • Will the real Peyton Manning please stand up?

    Associated Press|Sep 10, 2015

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) - Peyton Manning's summer was both dazzling and perplexing. Practices consisted of sprint-outs, roll-outs and bootlegs from under center, play-action passes from the pistol formation and scrambles for first downs in defiance of his 39-year-old legs. Preseason games were filled with empty backfields and shotgun formations that produced a paucity of points and plenty of angst among Broncos fans and fantasy football owners alike. Which Manning shows up Sunday is the subject...

  • UW defense has room for improvement, new challenges for next game

    Robert Gagliardi, WyoSports|Sep 9, 2015

LARAMIE -- The reasons were numerous for the defensive struggles for the University of Wyoming in its 24-13 season-opening loss to North Dakota this past Saturday. "Being disciplined with my eyes," redshirt freshman walk-on safety Marcus Epps said. "Cancelling out gaps" along the defensive line, second-year coach Craig Bohl said. Defensive coordinator Steve Stanard said "lining up correctly, playing faster and taking better tackling angles" as his biggest areas of improvement. "Youth and...

  • Cowboys work to correct shortcomings from opener

    Robert Gagliardi, WyoSports|Sep 8, 2015

LARAMIE -- Upon further review, video confirmed what University of Wyoming football coach Craig Bohl initially thought. That his football team played poorly in its 24-13 season-opening loss to North Dakota last Saturday. "We all own that as coaches and players, and we're in the process of doing all the things we can do get the direction of this football team changed," Bohl said during his weekly news conference Monday afternoon. "I think there needs to be a measured approach. You don't have...

  • FLAWLESS VICTORY

    Sisco Molina, Sports Editor|Sep 8, 2015

WORLAND – The weekend could not have gone any better for the Lady Warriors. After splitting matches at the Douglas Invite to open the season, Worland went 4-0 over the weekend and never dropped a single game as it won the Border Wars Invitational in Cody. Pitted against various teams from Montana, the Lady Warriors were unmatched on the court and seemed be clicking well early on. "In volleyball it's very easy to play at the level of competition, it's hard to play above that. But our girls p...

  • Long wait, journey finally ends for Coffman

    Robert Gagliardi, WyoSports|Sep 5, 2015

LARAMIE – On Nov. 30, 2013, Cameron Coffman saw mop-up duty at quarterback for Indiana in a 56-36 home victory over Purdue. But Coffman realized a change was needed earlier than that. He was a 10-game starter in 2012 with the Hoosiers, where he was second in the Big Ten Conference in passing yards per game, completions and attempts; third in passing yards; and fourth in total offense as Indiana finished with a 5-7 record. The coaching staff went in a different direction the following season a...

  • Warriors grind out a victory

    Sisco Molina, Sports Editor|Sep 5, 2015

LANDER – Todd Weber’s head coaching debut didn’t go as smoothly as he would have liked Friday, but he was happy with the result as the Warriors found a way to win a close game in Lander 13-6. The offense had trouble sustaining drives due to mental errors across the offensive line – mainly false start penalties, bad exchanges from the center to quarterback and subpar pass protection. Luckily the defense was up to the task, holding Lander to only 97 yards of total offense and also keeping the offense from scoring. “I was super proud of our kids,...
