  • Hear Me Out...NBA wading into troubled waters

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Sep 26, 2019

When the Jags Jalen Ramsey requested a trade at the end of Week 2, all the NFL guys lost their minds and were claiming the NFL was turning into the NBA. Obviously, it was an overreaction because there are plenty of cases with NFL superstars demanding a trade. It’s just a superstar thing. It was weird that Hall of Famer Steve Young, who was one of the first to go in on this NFL-NBA comp, forgot about Joe Montana demanding a trade after the Niners chose him over Montana. Just goes to show recency bias is a real thing. Anyways, of the two l... Full story

  • Hear Me Out...College athletics and money

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Sep 19, 2019

Last week the California Senate passed a bill that’s going to allow student-athletes to seek out endorsements and make money off their likenesses. It’s a groundbreaking bill that I’m sure has NCAA president Mark Emmett and pals panicked. If California Governor Gavin Newsome signs the bill it will put the NCAA in a tough position. Do they crack down and basically force out every California school? If they do that you can imagine the lawsuits are going to be flying all over the place. Say what you will about the state of college athletics in Ca... Full story

Warriors repeat as 3A East champs Simmons defends conference title, WHS Golf nabs six total All-Conference honors By ALEX KUHN Sport Editor WORLAND - It was another big win for the Warriors as they cruised to 3A East conference champions, successfully defending their title from last season at the Cottonwood Golf Course in Torrington on Sept. 12-13. "The wind blew between 30 and 50 mph on Thursday," said WHS golf coach Chad Rose. "Given how fast the greens were already, this made holding the... Full story

  • Lady Bobcats earn big road victory in Powell

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Sep 19, 2019

THERMOPOLIS - The Hot Springs County High School volleyball team was on the road twice last week, first was their Sept. 12 match at Powell High School and on Sept. 13-14 they were at Rawlins High School for the Outlaw Invitational. Of those two contests for the Lady Bobcats, their 3-1, (25-12, 25-23, 26-28, 25-14) victory over Powell was the highlight of the week for them. Not only did they pick up a road win, but they also didn't let adversity sink them. Instead, they put their heads down and... Full story

  • Lady Pioneers looking to bounce back with three-match homestand

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Sep 19, 2019

TEN SLEEP - The Meeteetse volleyball Invitational did not go as planned for the Ten Sleep Lady Pioneers. But while they did not pick up as many wins as they would have liked TSHS volleyball coach Desiree Egger believes the lessons learned should benefit the team in the long run. "It was a learning experience. We were fighting our serving and down ball all tournament. I like how we played better on Saturday but we just didn't play well on Friday. Our transitioning wasn't great, we weren't... Full story

  • Warriors determined to limit turnovers vs. Cody

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Sep 12, 2019

WORLAND - The scoreboard in the Worland High School football team's first game of the season was a bit deceiving. The Warriors lost to the Powell Panthers 24-7 and while it seems like a beat down the game was much closer. "We were right there and had a couple of inopportune things happen," said WHS football coach Ryan Utterback. "We were literally inches away a few times. We had too many turnovers and you can't expect to win with that. A couple of those turnovers came when we were hurrying and... Full story

  • Lady Pioneers off to a solid start

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Sep 12, 2019

TEN SLEEP - Normally, the first quarter of the season Ten Sleep High School volleyball is spent building chemistry and learning the ropes. This year the Lady Pioneers have gotten off to a decent start with last week's win over 1A Northwest rival St. Stephens. "We played well," said TSHS volleyball coach Desiree Egger. "It was the first time we played with six this season and we were planning and practicing like we were going to play with five. Josie Decker didn't even practice with us on... Full story

  • HSCHS cross-country ahead of schedule

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Sep 12, 2019

THERMOPOLIS - It is early in the cross-country team season and the Hot Springs County High School runners are already beating expectations. If they keep up their current pace, coach Stephanie Metz will have one of those good problems and just have to raise the bar for her team. "I was really excited about it," said HSCHS cross-country coach Stephanie Metz about her team's performance in Douglas. "We came out pretty strong. We were kind of thrown off because they combined the JV and varsity, so... Full story

  • NFL Week 1 thoughts

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Sep 12, 2019

It was a crazy Week 1 for the NFL and I have a few thoughts on all the happenings around the league. AB TO THE PATS From an “If I’m playing Madden” viewpoint, AB on the Pats is going be a lot of fun. From an everything else viewpoint, I’m not sure how I feel about AB on the Pats. I’m not totally buying the “AB planned this all along” which by the way makes AB look like more of a jerk. Rather than just demand a trade, he has to pretend to be on the verge of a nervous breakdown and that he doesn’t want to play football anymore. For me, it’s ju... Full story

  • Nice weather brings solid starting times for WHS cross-country runners

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Sep 5, 2019

WORLAND - Taking advantage of the cooler weather the Worland High School cross-country team put up stronger starting numbers as they began their season with the Billings Invitational on August 31. Typically, the Billings Invitational is among the hottest races Worland runs all year as it is held in August. Last week though, the weather was the best WHS cross-country coach Tanya Kienlen has seen. With cloud cover and light rain, the temperatures around the low 80s the Worland runners poster stron... Full story

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Aug 29, 2019

WORLAND - Hosting the first annual Ed Cook Classic high school golf tournament at Green Hills Golf Course in Worland on Aug. 22-23, the Warrior golf team shot a 320, 309 – 629 to finish second on their home course. "The boys are close to setting the bar higher than we have seen here at WHS. We have six of the top 12 players in 3A, and it is unfortunate that only five can play at state," said WHS golf coach Chad Rose. 3A's two-time defending champs, the Lander Tigers, won the tournament going 3... Full story

  • Back for more

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Aug 29, 2019

THERMOPOLIS - For seniors McKenna Bomengen and Tahja Hunt it has been quite the career for the Hot Springs County High School cross-country runners. The Lady Bobcat duo, as freshmen in 2016, were contributors to a team that finished as runners-up, with Hunt and Bomengen earning All-State honors. In 2017, they finished sixth and Bomengen earned her second All-State selection. Moving to 2A in 2018, not only did both grab All-State honors, with Hunt finishing second overall, they led their team to... Full story

These seven teams can either have a lot go right this season, or a lot go wrong and I’m basing my prediction that things will mostly go wrong for them. The subcategories for the Either, Or teams are Should, Should Be Better, Purgatory and Drop off. The over/under win totals for each team are pulled from oddsshark.com and the stats are courtesy from pro-footballreference.com. Let’s get to it! SHOULD, SHOULD BE BETTER Bu... Full story

  • Hear Me Out...The most courageous 2019-20 NFL season predictions: The Baddies

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Aug 15, 2019

It's time! The NFL season is a few short weeks away and optimism abounds for all 32 NFL franchises. So what better way to burst some bubbles with another year of the most courageous NFL season predictions. I liked last year's format of separating the teams into categories (Bums, The Jeff Fisher Zone, In the hunt, Playoff Teams) rather than going by conference and division. Last year, I messed up the schedule and had to combine the In the Hunt and Playoff teams. This year I'm spreading it out through four weeks with the Playoff Teams being the... Full story

  • Hear Me Out...Action heroes and their like-minded spirits in the sports world

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Aug 1, 2019

I’m a sucker for the one-man army, heist and/or unapologetic action movies, your “Diehards”, James Bond, anything with Dwayne Johnson or the “Fast and Furious” franchise. I just love the spectacle of it all, the cheesy one-liners, how the henchmen, who are usually alluded to being highly-trained killers themselves, are terrible shots, like to attack one at a time and give up their gun advantage in favor of hand-to-hand fighting. LOVE. IT. ALL. Last week I was finally able to see “John Wick 3: Parabellum” and there’s nothing better when a movie... Full story

  • Golf pro Bjorhus settling in at Green Hills

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Aug 1, 2019

WORLAND - When Mike Propp and his Propper Golf Management got the contract to manage the Green Hills Golf Course in the fall of 2018 there was one man that Propp had in mind to become the course's new golf professional, that man is, Donnie Bjorhus. Bjorhus and Propp have been friends a while and worked together for the last few years. Propp was the Green Hills golf pro in 2016-17 and the golf pro at the Powell Golf Club in 2018. Before coming to Worland, Bjorhus was the golf pro at the Legion... Full story

  • Hear Me Out...The constant collision of sports and politics

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jul 25, 2019

It’s everyone’s favorite combination, sports and politics! In terms of ranking the best combos in human history, it goes peanut butter and chocolate, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick and at the top of the mountain, sports and politics. (I’m not sure which duo made people’s skin crawl more, Brady and Belichick or sports and politics?) Kidding, obviously, only one of those three doesn’t belong. Worlds collide, and the sports world and political world have been smashing into one another on the regular over the last handful of years. This latest co... Full story
