  • Hear Me Out...Wyoming's top five professional athletes of all time

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Aug 11, 2018

Uggghhh ... is anyone else getting exhausted by these Trump tweets? It's the same thing every year or the same insults thrown at people he doesn't like. Last week he took a shot at LeBron and the only thing surprising about it was how long it took him to do so. Then, in what's slowly becoming a tradition with the start of the NFL season, he complained about the NFL players and their demonstrations during the national anthem. It really feels like we're in a time paradox from "Star Trek" and...

    Robert Gagliardi, WyoSports|Aug 10, 2018

LARAMIE – Jalani Ellison's name has been mentioned more often than not. The University of Wyoming freshman cornerback has impressed coaches through the Cowboys' first 10 practices of fall camp. Listed at 6-foot and 160 pounds when he signed out of Reseda High in Reseda, California, Ellison is in the hunt to be UW's fourth cornerback, along with redshirt junior Antonio Hull and redshirt freshmen C.J. Coldon and Keyon Blankenbaker. "Athletically, he brings a different element to the group, w...

  • Big-play threat in passing game critical to UW's offensive success

    Robert Gagliardi, WyoSports|Aug 7, 2018

Who will be the quarterback, and how will he play? Who will run the ball? Will the offensive line be better? Those are all legitimate questions about the University of Wyoming's offense heading into this season. But there is another question that is key to the Cowboys' success offensively in 2018: Who is the big-play threat at wide receiver? Among the seven receivers who caught passes last season, along with three tight ends, all return. However, junior receiver C.J. Johnson, who led UW with...

  • Hear Me Out...When did we let the tattletales and rats take the wheel?

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Aug 4, 2018

Remember in grade school when one of the biggest insults you could lob at someone was calling them a tattletale? Calling someone a tattletale during recess was the equivalent of challenging another man’s honor during colonial days. Both had similar outcomes too, either the accused slinked away and was forever marked a tattletale/man of no honor, or you dueled. Simple and to the point, this prevented kids from dropping dimes on people for every minor transgression, it was better to be the dumb kid rather than the tattletale. To be clear a t...

  • New Yellowstone head promises job won't be political

Mark Davis, Powell Tribune Via Wyoming News Exchange|Aug 1, 2018

POWELL - It's a tough way to get a job. As Cameron "Cam" Sholly prepares to move to his new offices as director at Yellowstone National Park, some have suggested the move is being made under a dark cloud. Sholly is replacing popular superintendent Dan Wenk, who's been Yellowstone's chief for seven years. Wenk has said he was punitively forced out after disagreements with the Trump administration. Wenk opted to retire in August rather than accept a move to Washington, D.C., for a new position...

The Wyoming High School Activities Association has given them the go-ahead to play for Worland High School this season. • Cowboys remain humble despite higher expectations

    Robert Gagliardi, WyoSports|Jul 26, 2018

LAS VEGAS – The University of Wyoming football team often has been the underdog since the Mountain West's first year in 1999. The Cowboys have fed off that underdog mentality to prove people wrong and finish better than expected. For example, they were picked to finish last in the Mountain Division in 2016, but won it. However, expectations are higher this season, for both the team and certain players. The media picked UW to finish second behind Boise State in the division, which was a...

By ALEX KUHN Sports Editor YELLOWSTONE - Lake trout have decimated the population of the Yellowstone cutthroat in Yellowstone Lake since 1994. • A Tough Decision: Ten Sleep to forfeit 2018 football season

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jul 21, 2018

TEN SLEEP - It's always nice easing into a new position before the tougher aspects and decisions of the job begin to take shape. For Ten Sleep's newly appointed Activities Director Sarah Novak, she had no such luxury. As the new TSHS AD, after the departure of principal and AD, Russ Budmayr, Novak's first order of business in May was to figure out what to do with the football program. After exploring different options and only having four players 100 percent committed to the season, Novak, and...

WORLAND - After last season ended with a loss in the Wyoming USA fastpitch state championship game, the Worland 16U Wildfires team made a goal for the 2018 season, make it back to the title game and win it. The Wildfires were able to check that goal off last Saturday in Casper as they defeated the Casper Cobras 18-7 to win the recreation division. The Wildfires played a total of five games going 4-1 against the Riverton Trailblazers and Casper Cobras, with their only loss coming in their first...

  • Yellowstone Lake Invaders: Boots on the ground

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jul 18, 2018

YELLOWSTONE -In 1994 it was discovered that nonnative, predatory lake trout had made their way into Yellowstone Lake and as a result began to wreak havoc on the population numbers of the lake's native species, the Yellowstone cutthroat trout. Since the discovery efforts have been underway to restore the cutthroat as the dominant species of Yellowstone Lake many have stepped up and answered the call for the restoration of the cutthroats like Julia and George Argyros. The Argyroses established a...

  • A nice start the summer

    David Watson, WyoSports|Jul 14, 2018

LARAMIE – Jordan Spears is used to having good – if not really good – rodeo seasons to hang his hat on. The bull rider from Redding, California, took a big leap to kick-starting the bulk of his summer schedule Wednesday when he was crowned the 78th annual Laramie Jubilee Days Mr. T Xtreme Bull Riding champion. "My job is to come here, stay on my bull and let everything settle where it settles," Spears said. "That's why I travel up and down the road – to perform my best every time and I'm hap...

  • Hear Me Out...My first 'get off my lawn' take

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Jul 14, 2018

It was bound to happen, a day was going to come when I read a story and my inner curmudgeon would be unleashed like that of a rage-fueled Norse god, leading me to write my first "get off my lawn" or "old man yells at could" take. But unlike most in sports media who want to deny or fight that time and pop culture is passing them by, I'm leaning into it. I am genuinely excited about this and even though I'm only 30, I've started to notice that pop culture has been pulling further and further...

  • Looking to the future

    Robert Gagliardi, WyoSports|Jul 12, 2018

LARAMIE – During this past season, at Mount Zion Academy in Baltimore, Tariq Johnson had some free time and watched the University of Wyoming men's basketball team defeat Nevada 104-103 in double overtime at home. "I kept telling myself, 'I can see myself playing there because of their playing style, which was the same as at Mount Zion,'" Johnson said. About a month later, UW started recruiting the 6-foot-5, 200-pound guard and eventually signed him. "When I got the first call (from Wyoming), I...
