University of Wyoming junior Bryce Ailshie is ready for a breakout performance. So is his coach. Both have a good feeling it could come this weekend. Ailshie and the rest of the UW track and field teams will be in Fresno, California, today through Saturday for the Mountain West Championships. The meet starts today with the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon. The main portion of the schedule begins Friday and ends Saturday. Ailshie's consistency in the 800-meter run helped him place fifth in...
BUFFALO - The past few seasons at Buffalo High School have been a tough place to play for the Worland Lady Warriors soccer team and Tuesday night proved to be no different, as the Lady Warriors had an up and down performance before ultimately falling to the Lady Bison 3-2. Tuesday's match did not start the best for the No. 2 Lady Warriors (10-5), within two minutes of the match the No. 3 Lady Bison (7-7-3) scored and took a 1-0 advantage. "We started so flat but in the second half they stepped i...
WORLAND - The regular season for track and field is finished, and this week and next is about finishing strong for the Worland High School track and field athletes. The Warriors and Lady Warriors closed out the regular season, Friday at the Trackstravanganzameet in Cody. Highlights from the meet were Alexa Caballero (shot put), Porter Harman (800-meter run) and Luke Mortimer (300-meter hurdles) all automatically qualifying for the 3A State meet in their respective events. Harman and Mortimer...
WORLAND - In their final home soccer match of the season the Worland Lady Warriors dominated the Rawlins Lady Outlaws on both ends of the pitch on their way to a 4-0 victory Friday on senior night at Worland High School. "I was really impressed with them and I loved that I could sub and everywhere I subbed we were fine. Moving on to state that's something we've been working on, being able to make switches and not lose intensity or have gaps on the field. We were just solid and I liked that, movi...
Most people despise change and it doesn't take a song from the genius Bob Dylan to realize times are a changin'. (Truly, Bob Dylan is a genius because when you have a voice like that of a dog chew toy on its last leg, you better be a brilliant lyricist.) I'm of the belief that change is good, for the most part. Is it uncomfortable at times? Sure, but in the end, it is generally for the best. The sports world has seen its fair share of change whether that was Jackie Robinson breaking the color...
DOUGLAS - Twelve seconds is all it took for the Worland Warriors to grab the lead and never look back in their 5-1 victory over Douglas Thursday night at Douglas Middle School. "Devin [Mercado] put pressure on the defender, stole the ball and scored," said WHS boys soccer coach Ron Overcast. "I was really proud of them today. These guys are pretty resilient and they're competitors." The No. 1-ranked 3A boys soccer team, the Warriors (12-1), did not leave anything to chance in their match...
WORLAND - Kickoff for both Worland High School soccer matches Thursday and Friday has been changed. Thursday's matches at Douglas High School will begin at 3:30 p.m. for the No. 2 Lady Warriors and 5:30 p.m. for the No. 1 Warriors. Friday's matches at home vs. Rawlins High School will start at 3 p.m. for the Lady Warriors followed by the Warriors match at 5 p.m. With Friday's matches being moved up, senior night will take place between the boys and girls matches....
WORLAND - Next week the 3A East regional track and field meet in Douglas will be underway but for this week the Worland High School track team will focus on their final meet of the regular season in Cody Friday afternoon. Last week the Warriors and Lady Warriors kept the positive momentum rolling with another strong outing in Powell on Thursday, then Friday three Worland athletes competed in the Wyoming Track Classic at Kelly Walsh High School in Casper. Junior Porter Harman, freshman McKenna Mi...
PINEDALE - There was not letdown match, just another dominant win for the Worland Warriors soccer team Saturday at Pinedale High School as they rolled to a 4-0 victory over the Wranglers. The No. 1 Warriors (11-1) came out with the same laser focus as they did in their win against No. 3 Star Valley the night before. WHS boys soccer coach Ron Overcast said, "We came out Saturday with a lot of energy. We played well, we played hard and took care of business. It's a tough road trip and the guys han...
AFTON - Without starting keeper Karla Gaytan, midfielder Logan Yule and defenders Kyra Klinghagen and Jaycee Page, the Worland Lady Warriors found a way to defeat the Star Valley Lady Braves 3-2 in a matchup between top-ranked 3A girls soccer teams Friday night at Star Valley High School. "I was super impressed with their teamwork today. Every single player stepped up and worked hard. I had McKenna [Butte] in goal and she's been practicing for five days. The on goal was off a PK [penalty kick]...
Usually, when I can't think of a topic for the week's column, I bust out the column buffet where I touch on a few topics going on in the world of sports. But I'm going to be honest, this week there weren't enough topics that really caught my interest. Instead, I'm busting out the first column sampler, not as satisfying as the column buffet but just as entertaining. Just like the sampling circuit at Costco, a bit random like how they have a Listerine station from time to time or the fruit...
ARLINGTON, Texas – The University of Wyoming is now an Adidas school – for all of its sports. UW announced Wednesday an eight-year contract with the Portland, Oregon, based company to supply footwear, apparel and accessories for all 17 of its men's and women's sports. The contract starts June 1. UW athletics director Tom Burman said the contract is worth $5.75 million, and could be extended one year. However, most of the money in the contract involves product, not actual dollars. Burman sai...
DALLAS (AP) - In 1967, the San Diego Chargers selected defensive tackle Ron "Pedro" Billingsley with the 14th overall pick of the NFL/AFL Draft. Billingsley, who died last February, was a 6-foot-8 University of Wyoming graduate out of Florence, Alabama. He was taken 10 picks after Purdue quarterback Bob Griese, one of eight Hall of Famers taken in that draft, which lasted 17 rounds. It was a different era then. The Chargers were still three years away from joining the NFL, but 1967 marked the...
WORLAND - Last Thursday's Riverton Twilight track and field meet turned out to be Worland's best performance of the season. The Warriors and Lady Warriors had top-eight placers in nearly every event and added more automatic state qualifiers to their list. "We had 66 top-eight placers. That's amazing and tremendous. We had 35 PRs [personal records] and three more kids automatically qualify. The kids performed really well and I keep telling them everything we're doing right now is getting us...
Simmons still finding his footing By ALEX KUHN Sports Editor WORLAND - Worland youth golfer Karsten Simmons finished another leg of the Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour on April 14-15. For this outing, the RMJGT had Simmons battling it out in the 16-19 age division at Overland Golf Course in Overland, Colo. Simmons finished third, shooting a 75, 72-147 in the cold and windy tournament. Starting the second and final round, Simmons was five strokes away from leader Ben Daane and determined to...
I hate to brag, but I saw "Rampage" last weekend, and surprisingly I liked it. The movie wasn't particularly good but for what it is, a fun over-the-top action film, it hits the spot. As one would expect, Dwayne Johnson carries the movie from start to finish. Overall, I'd put it firmly in the matinee/Redbox range. But two things came up during the 107-minute runtime that I couldn't stop thinking about. First was the backstory of Johnson's character. The character is an ape specialist, but...
TEN SLEEP - The Ten Sleep track and field team has not been at full strength in their past few outings. Nonetheless, the Pioneers and Lady Pioneers have not let that become an excuse during competition. "It'll be nice when we get our full team back. Our kids run a little bit differently when we take a smaller group. I think they feed off each other and it's hard when we're missing half our team," said Ten Sleep track and field coach Desiree Egger. At Ten Sleep's recent meet in Riverton on Thursd...
CODY - The Worland Warriors soccer team took the No. 1-ranking last week and since then, coach Ron Overcast has reminded his team just because they are No. 1 it doesn't mean teams are going to roll over for them. Quite the opposite, now everyone is going to be gunning for them with every team out to take down the No. 1 Warriors. Knowing the targets are on their backs the Warriors (9-1) have trained harder to avoid any letdown and Thursday night, with the opportunity to clinch the 3A Northwest...
WORLAND - The Worland High School track and field team added more names to their automatic qualifier list for the 3A state meet last Saturday in Riverton. And today they are hoping to add even more as they return to Riverton for the Wolverine Twilight meet. Last weekend in Riverton the Warriors placed fourth out of 16 teams, which is quite impressive when you consider they weren't at full strength. "Because of prom, we took 22 boys and eight girls, but there was a load of good competition there...
WORLAND - The Worland High School golf team spring season is underway and last Thursday they hosted a tournament at the Green Hills Golf Course. Competing against golfers from Cody, Kemmerer, Lander, Lovell, Powell, Riverton, Sheridan and Thermopolis, the Warriors placed fourth out of seven, shooting a 387, and the Lady Warriors were fourth out of four, shooting a 337. Warrior Logan Foote shot a team-best 90, teammates Jose Galarza, Karter Dunham and Ivan Perez shot 95, 97 and 105,...
POWELL - On March 27 the Powell Lady Panthers handed the Worland Lady Warriors a 5-0 defeat. On Monday at Powell High School the Lady Warriors returned the favor with a 3-1 win over the Lady Panthers in a matchup between the two 3A Northwest soccer rivals. "The girls played so well, the little things we're working on are starting to come together. Like understanding defensive triggers, when to step back, when to step forward. Overall, the girls played so hard and played their hearts out," said...
WORLAND - It only took two weeks but the Wyoming weather held long enough for Worland High School track and field team to host their annual D&D Invitational Thursday night at Worland High School. "We were glad to have the meet this week because the weather at the start of the week wasn't looking too good. I teased Mr. Mortimer our AD about not canceling anything and we were going to run it no matter what. And it ended up being a really nice meet. "There were only five teams but it does take a...
I know winning the Master's was an incredible achievement for Patrick Reed last weekend. But Reed slipping on the green jacket was the second most impressive highlight at Augusta National, the first belongs to Tony Finau. What's so impressive about a guy that finished tied for 10th you ask? Well, Finau played all four rounds on a severe high ankle sprain after he dislocated his ankle during the Par-3 Contest the day before the Master's started. Finau dislocated his ankle, popped that sucker...
RIVERTON - This week's new WyoPreps soccer rankings had a new No. 1 with the Worland Warriors rising to the top spot. The new ranking could have set up a potential letdown match against the Riverton Wolverines on Thursday. Instead, the Warriors took care of business and left Riverton High School with a 3-0 victory. "I thought we played really well tonight. It was cold and windy and we didn't let that bother us. We worked on different patterns and ways to attack and it's always good to see when...
TEN SLEEP - Just like the Worland High School track and field team, the Ten Sleep High School track and field team has been cooped up the past few weeks, as the weather has spoiled a couple meets. "We've gone with the flow. We keep practicing and reassuring the kids that they will get their chance. You just have to be flexible," said TSHS track and field coach Desiree Egger. Practicing without the payoff of a meet has made the Pioneer and Lady Pioneer athletes a bit restless. Egger understands...
