WORLAND - Weather has spoiled the Worland track and field team's past two meets, with meets in Buffalo and Powell canceled due to snow, but this Thursday Worland will be back in action as they host the D & D Invitational. "It's been frustrating not having meets, but everyone else is in the same boat. Every team has gone through it but with four meets in the coming weeks should help out and where we need to shuffle the kids around too," said WHS track and field coach Tracey Wiley. The D & D...
WORLAND - The second day of the Pinnacle Challengers Cup girls soccer tournament did end in a win of the Worland Lady Warriors, just not in the match they wanted. The No. 5 Lady Warriors defeated the Evanston Lady Red Devils 3-2 in the Challengers Cup third-place match Saturday at Worland High School. The Wassum sisters, senior Casey and sophomore Kate, were responsible for Worland's three goals. Kate logged one goal, while Casey scored two, with the second turning out to be the game-deciding...
The college basketball season came to an end on Monday with the Villanova Wildcats raising the trophy. I for one was happy that ‘Nova won, not because of the “At least we lost to the champs” defense but that their 18 3-pointers against my Kansas Jayhawks were not for nothing. And to be honest, I’m still shell-shocked from that loss. 18 3-pointers in one game. The Jayhawks scored nearly 80 points and lost. I started getting worried around the seventh and eighth Wildcat 3. Not so much that they were going in but how they were made. Each shot wa...
WORLAND - After a tough loss last week the Worland Lady Warriors soccer team showed resiliency Friday afternoon at Worland High School with two convincing victories to put them in the Pinnacle Challengers Cup semifinals. The No. 5-ranked Lady Warriors downed Pinedale 6-0 in the first round, and in the quarterfinals controlled No. 4 Douglas on their way to a 2-0 win to set up a semifinal match with the No. 1-ranked Cody Fillies today at 11 a.m. "We were a thousand times better than we were agains...
WORLAND - The show must go on. Snow is forecasted to fall today during the start of the Pinnacle Challenger's Cup. The best 3A and 4A girls soccer have to offer will battle it out to see who is left standing over the course of the two-day, 14-team tournament. Matches for the tournament will be played at Worland High School on the east and west fields, Worland Middle School and the Worland Community Center Complex. Also, matches will consist of two 30-minute halves, no overtime with all ties...

WORLAND - Since weather canceled last week's meet in Buffalo the Worland High School track team is ready to go for Saturday's meet in Powell, after the extended layoff. "We had practice but it was crazy because we were in shorts and T-shirts and were wishing we could have hosted it. Looking over at the mountain it was black and knowing that just on the other side Buffalo had gotten eight inches of snow," said WHS track coach Tracey Wiley. "We did have a good workout and I gave them Friday off to...
WORLAND - Worland's gymnastics club, the 307 Twisters, went head to head against the best Wyoming had to offer on March 16-18 in Gillette. And to their credit, the Twisters held their own against the bigger gyms from Casper and Gillette. Of the nine Twisters competing at the 2018 Wyoming State Gymnastics meet, all nine podiumed in the vault, bars, beam, floor or all-around. The highlight for the team was Samantha Keller finishing fourth in the all-around, scoring a 35.450 in the XG level,...
The sneaky good part about one of the best stretches in sports By ALEX KUHN Sports Editor From March to the end of April is one of the best times on the sports calendar. There's the NCAA tournament and today the Final Four gets underway, then Monday a National Champion will be crowned (*Fingers crossed* hopefully it's the Jayhawks). The Masters is next weekend, which could be huge this year with a possibly resurrected Tiger Woods. The NBA playoffs start the following week, and what looked like...
Fullback position still evolving, developing for Cowboys LARAMIE – Mike Bath wants three but, right now, he only has one. The University of Wyoming fullbacks/tight ends coach wants three fullbacks who can play in games for the Cowboys this season. The departure of four-year starter Drew Van Maanen left a rather large gap at that position. Junior Jaylon Watson is the fullback on the roster with game experience, but even that is limited to roughly 40 snaps. Along with Watson, four other players g...
WORLAND - Now that the worst of winter is behind us, Worland's Karsten Simmons is back out on the golf course, and competed in his first tournament of 2018. As part of the Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour, Simmons traveled to Gilbert, Arizona, to play in the Kokopelli Classic at the Kokopelli Golf Club on March 17-18. Simmons battled it out in the 16- to 19-year-old age division and got his season in the RMJGT off to a nice start, shooting 81, 82 – 164 to finish in third place. Not only was t...

Gonsalez went 21 of 25 and 4 of 5 in the tiebreaker round to win the boys 12-13 age division for Region Eight, which consist of the state winners from Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming. In 2013 Gonsalez won Region Eight in the 8- to 9-year-old division to make his first trip to the na...
High-octane offense powers No. 2 Warriors to win over Powell By ALEX KUHN Sports Editor WORLAND - When given the option of receiving bad news or good news first, take the bad news first that way the good news softens or eliminates the bad news. The bad news for the Worland Warrior soccer team was they allowed their first goals of the season as the Panthers found the back of the net twice. The good news for the Warriors, they too put the ball between the goal post and did so 11 times in their...
Worland track braves the wind and cold at Cody meet By ALEX KUHN Sports Editor CODY - The spring sports season in Wyoming isn't complete without some rain, snow, cold or wind, and on Saturday at Cody High School the Worland High School track and field team experienced two of the four. But even with the cold and windy weather the WHS athletes went out and performed their best. "The kids did really well. The weather was pretty good until about noon, then it was windy and terrible cold conditions....
WORLAND - A 1-0 victory may not look like a dominating win, but the Worland Warriors soccer team did just that Friday night at Worland High School. Matching up against 3A's defending state champions and 3A Northwest division foe the Cody Broncs, the Warriors controlled most the match and had plenty of shots on goal but, to use a basketball term, the shots were not falling. Fortunately for the Warriors, with less than two minutes remaining in the match, junior Rylan Mocko struck in the...
After a wild first and second round of the NCAA men's basketball tournament, there's been some handwringing over the state of college basketball. We finally had a 16-seed drop a 1-seed (I feel bad for the University of Virginia fans, but I was slightly relieved someone other than my Kansas Jayhawks took that bullet) and another 1-seed failing to make it to the second week of the tournament. Some in sports media were saying college basketball is in official crisis mode Whether you were watching...

Rice s...
WORLAND - Worland High School senior Saige Jones signed her letter of intent to play volleyball and continue her education for the Sheridan College Generals. "I'm super excited because I love volleyball and I'm thankful for the opportunity to play for another two years," said Jones. During her Worland Lady Warriors volleyball career, Jones was a part of the 2015 3A State championship team as a reserve and was a reserve on the 2016 team that lost in the semifinals. In her senior season, Jones...
TEN SLEEP - As one of the smaller schools in 1A, Ten Sleep track and field coach Desiree Egger is used to getting one or the other, in terms of the athletes she has out for the team. It's either mostly girls with one to two boys or vice versa. Egger won't have to worry about having either/or because for the 2018 season, Ten Sleep has 12 athletes out, six boys and six girls. "I can't even remember having six boys in my tenure here," said Egger. Last year the Lady Pioneers finished third at the...
CASPER - The track season is underway and for the Worland High School track team they opened up their season to a solid start at the Glen Legler Invitational on Saturday at Natrona High School. Senior pole vaulter Josh Garza was the team's only automatic qualifier for the 3A State meet in Casper May 17-19. Garza cleared 12-6 to finish second behind Lander Valley's Nathan Mortherway, who cleared 13 feet. "Josh Garza AQed in the pole vault and that was great. We had several kids that came close....
WORLAND - Playing in their second-leg of a back-to-back the Worland Warriors soccer team had a sluggish start but, ultimately, found a way to down the Lander Valley Tigers 1-0 Friday night at Worland High School. After coming off an impressive 4-0 victory against the Riverton Wolverines the previous night, the Warriors, as teams tend to do at the beginning of any season, did not have the same sharpness to their game. "You could see it in the warmups and in the locker room. We just weren't as men...
It’s been awhile since my last column and a lot has happened while I’ve been away on my winter sports postseason sabbatical. - The NFL has turned into the NBA with trades flying around left and right and the Cleveland Browns might actually be good next season. This God-given planet we have produces countless mind-blowing wonders daily but the Browns, THE CLEVELAND BROWNS, being competitive and competent, is just too much to comprehend right now. - Tiger Woods might be back and love him, hate him; he’s good for golf. As a fan of Tiger, short...
WORLAND - Sometimes the best defense is a good offense and for the Worland Warriors soccer team that proved to be true Thursday night at Worland High School. In their season-opener, the Warriors dominated from start to finish as they downed the Riverton Wolverines 4-0. "I liked how aggressive we came out. We talked about making them [Riverton] react to what we were doing. We worked hard over the summer with our two-touch passing and keeping the ball moving. You could see the fruits of all the...
WORLAND - Using their athleticism to their advantage the Worland Lady Warriors soccer team was able to burn past the Riverton Lady Wolverines 3-0 Thursday afternoon at Worland High School. The Wassum sisters accounted for all three of Worland's goals, senior Casey Wassum scored two goals and Kate Wassum scored the other. As a whole the Lady Warriors are quite green on at the varsity level, six of their 11 starters earned their first start on Thursday. But once the nerves settled the Lady...
WORLAND - When Worland High School track and field coach Tracey Wiley took the helm of the program in 2016 her goal was to increase the number of athletes each season. Now, starting in her third season, Wiley has done just that. Nearly 70 athletes, 67 to be exact, will compete for Worland this season. It is quite the increase for the program that had 35 and 55 athletes in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Breaking the numbers down further, the Warriors will have 40 athletes out, while the Lady...
