  • Hear me out...Return from the winter sabbatical

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Mar 17, 2018

It’s been awhile since my last column and a lot has happened while I’ve been away on my winter sports postseason sabbatical. - The NFL has turned into the NBA with trades flying around left and right and the Cleveland Browns might actually be good next season. This God-given planet we have produces countless mind-blowing wonders daily but the Browns, THE CLEVELAND BROWNS, being competitive and competent, is just too much to comprehend right now. - Tiger Woods might be back and love him, hate him; he’s good for golf. As a fan of Tiger, short...

  • Warriors roll in 4-0 win over Riverton

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Mar 16, 2018

WORLAND - Sometimes the best defense is a good offense and for the Worland Warriors soccer team that proved to be true Thursday night at Worland High School. In their season-opener, the Warriors dominated from start to finish as they downed the Riverton Wolverines 4-0. "I liked how aggressive we came out. We talked about making them [Riverton] react to what we were doing. We worked hard over the summer with our two-touch passing and keeping the ball moving. You could see the fruits of all the...

  • Lady Warriors cruise to 3-0 victory over Riverton

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Mar 16, 2018

WORLAND - Using their athleticism to their advantage the Worland Lady Warriors soccer team was able to burn past the Riverton Lady Wolverines 3-0 Thursday afternoon at Worland High School. The Wassum sisters accounted for all three of Worland's goals, senior Casey Wassum scored two goals and Kate Wassum scored the other. As a whole the Lady Warriors are quite green on at the varsity level, six of their 11 starters earned their first start on Thursday. But once the nerves settled the Lady...

  • Worland track continues to grow

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Mar 15, 2018

WORLAND - When Worland High School track and field coach Tracey Wiley took the helm of the program in 2016 her goal was to increase the number of athletes each season. Now, starting in her third season, Wiley has done just that. Nearly 70 athletes, 67 to be exact, will compete for Worland this season. It is quite the increase for the program that had 35 and 55 athletes in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Breaking the numbers down further, the Warriors will have 40 athletes out, while the Lady...

  • Warriors end season as a top-five team

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Mar 13, 2018

CASPER - It is not how you start but how you finish and the Worland Warriors basketball team certainly proved that during this 2017-18 season. The journey began with plenty of ups and downs but when it mattered most the Warriors played their best basketball during the final two weeks of the season. "We don't set preseason goals at the start of the season. Instead, we have the mindset of getting better each day. I thought that's what our guys did. If we had set preseason goals, they wouldn't have...

CASPER - The Worland Lady Warriors basketball season ended with a loss as they fell to the Lyman Lady Eagles 72-54 in the 3A State tournament fifth-place game Saturday morning at Kelly Walsh High School. The strength of the Lady Eagles is playing physical and their All-State players, cousins McKinley Bradshaw and McKailey Bradshaw. The game plan for the Lady Warriors was to play physical, stop the Bradshaws, force the other Lyman players to step up. "We talked coming in that it was going to be...

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Mar 10, 2018

CASPER - Treating it as if it were another basketball game the Lady Warriors defeated the Cody Fillies 43-39 to extend their season one more day, Friday morning at Kelly Walsh High School. The pressures of an elimination game at the 3A State girls basketball tournament never got to the Lady Warriors. In fact, the team was composed and even keel from tipoff to the final buzzer. "We knocked down some shots, we didn't shoot it particularly well. In the first half we were 3 of 17 from the 3 [point...

WHS boys basketball coach Aaron Abel said, "There was silence for most of the time. I told them they deserved better, played hard and while they might have teary eyes and hanging heads in the locker room, I told them when we leave the...

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Mar 7, 2018

WORLAND - The Worland Warrior swimming season ended on Feb. 16 with the 3A State meet in Laramie. While the Warriors had a total of eight athletes competing this season, they were a strong eight. • Lady Warriors offense sputters in loss to Buffalo

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Mar 3, 2018

DOUGLAS - With a berth to the 3A State girls basketball tournament and 3A regional championship on the line, the Worland Lady Warriors need to get by 3A East: West division rival Buffalo to punch their tickets to both. Unfortunately, a tough showing offensively led to the 41-32 loss to the Lady Bison at Douglas High School Friday afternoon. "Too many turnovers, we turned it over 13 times in the second half. Giving up a 3-pointer at the end of the quarter really hurt too. We just never really...

  • Huskies don't blink in a state semifinal victory

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Mar 3, 2018

CASPER — Having reigned as the 1A boys basketball champions the past four seasons, the Burlington Huskies get every team's best shot and if a team is going to deny them their fifth-straight championship blinking is not advisable. The Encampment Tigers were one minute and 54 seconds away from dethroning the Huskies Friday night at Casper College, but Burlington showed their championship resolve and defeated the Tigers 48-42 in the 1A State semifinals. "We were at the point of do or die, and that's what I told them. I made them all look me in t...

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Mar 2, 2018

DOUGLAS - It was touch and go for the Worland Warriors during their 3A East boys basketball regional quarterfinal matchup against Torrington Thursday morning at Douglas. But when the final buzzer sounded the Warriors came out on top vs. the Trailblazers as they won 50-47 to advance to the semifinal round. "It was a game of runs and we made our run at the right time. We had some opportunities in the third quarter to break it open and couldn't do it. We missed some layups and free throws that let...

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Mar 1, 2018

WORLAND - The last time the Worland Lady Warriors faced Torrington they were still looking for their offensive rhythm and were defeated by the Lady Trailblazers 39-32, in Torrington. Since that Feb. 2 loss the Lady Warriors offense has found their groove and as they open the 3A East regional girls basketball tournament against Torrington, they are ready to make a postseason run. "We've had a pretty good week of practice. The kids are ready and I've been pleased with everything going on this...

  • One game at a time

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Feb 28, 2018

BURLINGTON - The goal for the Burlington Huskies this week at the 1A State boys basketball tournament is to focus on the game at hand and not get ahead of themselves by penciling themselves in the championship game. It becomes rather pointless to look ahead when you have yet to win the game right in front of you. "We're going to take it one game at a time and the boys are pretty good at focusing on the task at hand and moving to the next after that is completed," said BHS boys basketball coach...

    Alex Kuhn, Sports Editor|Feb 27, 2018

Coming off a rough 73-34 loss to Buffalo three days earlier, the Lady Bobcats gave the Lady Outlaws a game but fell just short in a 50-46 loss. "Girls responded with the first six points of the fourth quarter to close the gap to 37-34. We later made it a one-point game but couldn't quite finish. The girls battled hard and I was...
