WORLAND — Additional charges have been filed in connection with a high-speed chase that occurred last week.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, before his initial appearance in Washakie County Circuit Court Thursday, July 9, Adam Sanchez of Worland made threats regarding Worland Police Department Sergeant Sean Duffy to a Washakie County Sheriff’s Office detention deputy.
At approximately 9 a.m., the deputy escorted Sanchez to Washakie County Circuit Court.
After arriving in court, Sanchez was served with charging documents in connection with the previously alleged crime, according to the affidavit.
“(Sanchez) became highly upset after reading the charges and started talking and cursing out loud. (Sanchez) was ordered to calm down. (Sanchez) asked why he was charged with assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon,” the affidavit alleges.
Sanchez was subsequently ordered to reference his affidavit for an explanation.
The original charges stem from a high-speed pursuit that occurred in the Worland during the early morning hours of July 8. During the pursuit, Sanchez allegedly drove his vehicle in reverse at Duffy before a pursuit ensued. During the chase, Sanchez attempted to run Duffy off of Airport Road.
In addition to several misdemeanor charges including eluding and driving under suspension, Sanchez was originally charged with two counts of assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon, a felony with a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison, a fine of $10,000 or both.
According to the affidavit, Sanchez told the detention deputy, “I hope Duffy and his family come down with cancer. I will get Duffy.” After the detention deputy ordered Sanchez to stop making threatening statements, Sanchez allegedly said, “I will get his (F-word) ass.”
The detention deputy advised Sanchez not to say anything else except to his attorney. Sanchez allegedly replied, “I am going to twist off,” according to the affidavit.
In addition to the original charges, Sanchez is now charged with influencing, intimidating or impeding jurors, witnesses and officers, a felony with a punishment of up to 10 years in jail, a fine of $5,000 or both.
A preliminary hearing for the intimidation charge along with the assault charges is set for 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13.
