Longtime Worland resident, John William August, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at Washakie Medical Center on July 18, 2015 at age 88.
John was born on May 16, 1927 at Farr Camp, Colorado, a son of Veronika Ruth (Beres) and Geza Gus August. He was raised at Cameron and Florence Colorado where his family worked in the coal mines. He graduated from 8th grade at Walsen Camp, CO, and from Huerfano County High School in 1947.
He then enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served for two years at the end of World War II. John was recalled to the Navy in 1950 during the Korean War as a radioman and was discharged in 1953.
In 1949, between Navy tours, he met Agnes June Forbidussi at Mondo's Poor Boy Drive-In in Pueblo. They fell in love and were married in Raton, NM in 1950, with $2.50 in their pockets.
During their years together in Pueblo, John worked at several jobs including driving a city bus, a gasoline tanker, started to become a mechanic at a Chevrolet dealership, drove a cattle truck, worked at a creamery, and in a lumber yard.
In 1957 he started working for the Federal Aviation Administration, first in Rawlins, WY, then at LaJunta, CO in 1958. The family moved 13 times before being transferred to Worland, WY in 1966. He retired from the FAA in 1972.
John then worked at McCormac Redi-Mix for several years. After Agnes passed away in 1991, he started working at the Catholic Church, then the Oasis Car Wash, and for a laundromat.
John moved to Oak Harbor, Washington for several years, and returned to Worland in 2006.
He was a great family man, and was proud to be the patriarch of five generations of his family.
John was a member of the Worland Methodist Church for 49 years. He enjoyed the outdoors, riding his ruby red scooter, dining out, traveling, being with the Methodist Men's Group for coffee, and he was a fan of the Denver Broncos and the New York Yankees.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his beloved wife Agnes in 1991.
John is survived by his children Ronald (Deanna) August of Ellendale, ND, Danny (Lory) August and Sandra (Jim) Thompson both of Worland, WY, and "Lil Scottie" (Ruthann) August of Billings, MT; by ten grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Gus Steven (Roberta) August of Oregon, Ruth Lee (James) Sterk of Pueblo, CO, and Fred David (Genia) August of Oak Harbor, WA.
Graveside committal of his ashes will be held Wednesday, July 22nd at 9:00 AM at Riverview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Worland with the American Legion Post providing graveside military honors. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 AM at the United Methodist Church.
