WORLAND – After a letdown in Newcastle on Saturday, the No. 3 Lady Warriors were back on their home court Tuesday with a match against 3A West foe Cody.
Worland started off strong but had a bit of a lull in the third game before ultimately putting away the Fillies in four games 25-20, 25-17, 15-25 and 27-25.
"We needed a win tonight," Worland head coach Brittany Miller said after the four-game victory on Tuesday. "We needed to get better in transition and I felt we were a lot better transitioning off of the net tonight. We just need to be a little more aggressive offensively when it's tight."
Cody had control of the first game as it led 16-10 which forced Miller to call a timeout. That proved to be just what the Lady Warriors needed as they quickly erased the deficit and came back to win the first game 25-20.
Worland picked up right where it left off in the second game, starting off in complete control. Cody looked confused at times as some of its miscues led to the Lady Warriors racing out to an early 10-4 lead.
Once they got the lead, they never looked back and won the second game 25-17 and were in complete control leading 2-0.
But Cody showed some fight in the third game, refusing to be swept by opening up with 11 straight points. The Fillies took advantage of that momentum and closed out the third frame to force a fourth.
The fourth game was up and down for both sides as neither team was ever able to sustain any momentum. The two teams fought back and forth and late in the game it was tied 25-25. But Worland closed out the game and ultimately the match with a kill by Bailey Gibbons followed by a tip at the net by Lyndzi Rich to close out the win.
The Lady Warriors have a number of options to go to for offense and Miller said once they start to utilize them they will be a lot harder to stop.
"We have multiple hitters that can put the ball away and our girls need to realize that. We don't have to take all the pressure with just one hitter. We need to come out swinging and if they stop one of us we have two more hitters that we can go to."
Worland will have one practice today before heading to Powell on Thursday for a match with the Lady Panthers at 6 p.m.
