Town and conservation district seek new organization to pitch in
TEN SLEEP – In 2008, the Washakie County Conservation District (WCCD) purchased a recycling transport trailer for Ten Sleep, intended to collect the town’s recycling materials for hauling and disposal in Worland.
The program was sponsored by Ten Sleep Sage Stompers 4-H until last Friday, when the program was suspended due to inactivity, Ten Sleep Mayor Jack Haggerty reported. “At this point,” Haggerty said, “4-H has decided they can no longer continue their recycling efforts.”
After the 4-H decision to stop participation in the program, WCCD Chairman Dan Rice and Mayor Haggerty gathered the remaining recycling materials, including paper, aluminum cans and cardboard, and delivered the transport trailer to WCCD Director Torie Dietz. The trailer was then taken to the Worland landfill to be emptied. The receptacle will be stored in Worland until Ten Sleep can find a solution. Ten Sleep 4-H routinely collected, sorted, and delivered the recyclables to Pete Smet’s for processing, and were reimbursed for their mileage by the WCCD.
Dietz and Mayor Haggerty met Monday to discuss the future of the recycling program in Ten Sleep. Ultimately, the WWCD and Ten Sleep would like the service to return, and attempts are being made to find an organization or individual willing to take on the effort of retrieving and emptying the trailer on a regular basis. “Once a week would be prime,” Haggerty stated.
The Town of Ten Sleep will address the recycling situation and seek input during their next work session, scheduled for Oct. 6 at 12:30 p.m. at Ten Sleep Town Hall. Interested parties are invited to attend.
