Area Special Olympics athletes strike 'gold' at the fall tournament

WORLAND – The Special Olympic athletes from the Big Horn Basin did very well at the Special Olympics Fall Tournament Oct. 7 – 9 in Casper in the bowling and cycling competitions.

“I think our athletes did absolutely wonderful. They showed a competitive spirit and exemplified their oath, ‘Let me win. But if I cannot win, Let me be brave in the attempt,’” Washakie County Special Olympics coordinator/ director Yvonne Bryant said.

Single bowling athletes and awards:

Adam Beall and Mandy Tharp each received a gold medal.

Grace Nelson received a silver medal.

Patrick Costalez and Troy Edwards each received a fifth-place ribbon.

Doubles (team) bowling athletes and awards:

Quinn Bryant and Kenny Heckert, Audrey Shoyo and Kevin McLean and Michelle Christensen and Ashlee Light received a gold medal.

Roberta Gustafson and Raelynne Gall received a silver medal.

Alberto Bucio and Kenneth Simmons received a bronze medal.

Tim Heckert and Keary Heckert received a fourth-place ribbon.

Assisted bowling athletes and awards:

Emily Carr and Adrian Gentilini received a gold medal.

500 meter race:

Kevin McLean received a bronze medal.

1K race:

Roberta Gustafson, Tim Heckert and Kenneth Simmons each received a gold medal.

Alberto Bucio and Rae Gall each received a silver medal.

Kevin McLean received a bronze medal.

5K road race:

Bernie Swalstad received a gold medal.

Alberto Bucio, Rae Gall, Roberta Gustafson, Keary Heckert and Kenneth Simmons each received a bronze medal.

Tim Heckert received a fourth-place ribbon.

10K road race:

Bernie Swalstad received a gold medal.

Keary Heckert received a bronze medal.

The Special Olympics Fall Tournament is a competitive event for adults and children with intellectual disabilities with many different types of sports. According to the press release, the Special Olympics Wyoming competitive event features about 640 athletes in tennis, soccer, cycling and bowling. Athletes travel from all over the state to compete in the fall tournament.
