Scammers calling Worland businesses alleging past due payment for Rocky Mountain Power companies

WORLAND — A new wave of phone scams has hit the Worland area.

According to Washakie County dispatch logs, three Worland businesses received phone calls Monday from people claiming they were from Rocky Mountain Power and that the businesses’ bills were past due.

Larsen’s Bicycle, King’s Carpet and the Sunset Inn all received phone calls from the reported scammers Monday afternoon.

Rocky Mountain Power Spokesperson Margaret Oler said the calls are simply false.

“That’s not how Rocky Mountain Power does business. We encourage anyone receiving these calls to contact local authorities, because it is a crime. It’s theft,” Oler said.

She said Rocky Mountain Power periodically sends out news releases to remind customers that phone scammers are out there.

“It’s a problem that’s been occurring nationwide, and Rocky Mountain Power is not immune,” Oler said.

If you or someone you know receives a phone call, “jotting down” the caller’s phone number can help authorities investigate the matter.

Customers receiving questionable calls should disconnect the call and call Rocky Mountain Power Customer Service at 1-888-221-7070.

Those receiving phone calls are encouraged to contact the Worland Police Department at 307-347-4253 or the Washakie County Sheriff’s Office at 307-347-2242.
