Wyo. lacks policy on rainy day fund

CASPER (AP) — A report by the Pew Charitable Trusts says Wyoming’s $1.8 billion rainy day fund is one of the nation’s largest.

But it says the state is one of only two with such an account that lacks a law or policy governing its use.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports that Wyoming’s rainy day fund trails only Alaska and Texas in the amount of money it has stored away. But in proportion to its overall budget, Wyoming has the largest rainy day fund in the country.

The Pew report on the rainy day fund comes as many of Wyoming’s political leaders have said it’s time to discuss when and how to spend the money. The state faces a revenue shortfall because of the downturn in the mineral extraction industry.
