Serving the Big Horn Basin for over 100 years
George Taylor Muirhead, 89, of Cheyenne passed away December 24, 2015, at the VA Medical Center Hospice in Cheyenne.
George was born March 15, 1926 in Worland to George C. and Grace Taylor Muirhead. He attended grade and high school in Worland. He entered WWII shortly after high school graduation in 1944 and fought in the Pacific as a member of the Army Air ground crew. He attended the University of Wyoming briefly studying finance and banking before accepting employment in Colorado Springs.
George, like his father, enjoyed a long career in banking. While working in Colorado Springs in the 1950s, he fell in love with a beautiful Kentucky native named Frances (Frankie) Vollman who just happened to share a March 15th birthday. They married March 15, 1956, and have enjoyed nearly 60 years together. They raised their children in Worland where George was President of the Stockgrowers State Bank for many years. He deeply appreciated the people, history, and beauty of the Big Horn Basin and he passed that appreciation on to his children. He was an avid hunter and skier and a devoted family man.
After selling the bank in Worland in 1971, George moved his family to Colorado Springs where he invested in real estate and managed those investments for 20 years before returning to Wyoming and settling in Cheyenne. George always stayed in touch with his Worland classmates and he cherished visits and calls from his friends. He and Frankie enjoyed making new friends in the Pointe Frontier Retirement Community over the last several years.
George was a man of his word. He was a true patriot and a true gentleman. He will be remembered for his kindness and good humor even through illness.
George was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Muiriel Crouse; and his eldest son, George Jr. He is survived by his wife, Frankie; sons, Chris (Dixie) Muirhead and Clay (Ann) Muirhead; and daughter, Deborah (Michael) Kellam; as well as beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A memory service will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 30, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at the Lakeview Chapel at Schrader, Aragon and Jacoby Funeral Home. A private interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, George would want you to make time for one another and remember the dedicated men and women who are in active duty, veterans, their families, and those caring for veterans.
