'Once Upon a Mattress' opens Friday

WORLAND – The Worland Middle School will be performing "Once Upon a Mattress" at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday evening in the Middle School Auditorium. "The musical "Once Upon a Mattress" is basically the story of "the Princess and the Pea," Worland Middle School sixth-grade band teacher/ musical director Amelia Roberts said.

The story of "Once Upon a Mattress" is, according to broadwaymusicalhome.com, as follows; "Princess Winnifred arrives at Prince Dauntless the Drab's castle hoping for the hand of the prince. His mother, Queen Agravain, insists that her son can only marry a princess of true blood (one who can feel a pea that is underneath a pile of mattresses). Winifred passes the test, unable to sleep all night from discomfort and they live happily ever after."

Worland Middle School's version will be a little different than the version where Carol Burnett first debuted on Broadway. "We will be doing the junior version of the play," Roberts said.

The musical will have different leads each night. "We have a double cast for the four lead roles. The leads from Friday night will be in the ensemble on Saturday night and the leads for Saturday night will be in the ensemble Friday night," Roberts explained.

"The students have worked very hard and I am very proud of the progress that they have made. I hope for a great turn out so people can see the great talent that we have in Worland," Roberts said.
