Althea Adeline (Smail) Brookshire

Althea Adeline (Smail) Brookshire passed away February 10, 2016 at Beatrice Hover Assisted living in Longmont, CO. She was 104 years old.

She was born March 12, 1911 in Andrew, Iowa the daughter of John Smail and Cleo (Van Meter) Smail. She spent her childhood in Iowa, graduating from High School in 1930. She came to Wyoming in 1931 and worked at various jobs during the depression. She had fond memories of working at the Savarsey Bakery and the Padlock Ranch.

She married Joe Brookshire in Powell, Wyoming on June 12, 1937. They traveled the oil fields during the war years and settled permanently in Thermopolis when the children started school. Althea and Joe operated Brookshire’s Sales & Service, until their retirement in the late 1980’s. Althea volunteered as a Red Cross “Gray Lady” at the Pioneer Home for many years. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church, teaching Sunday school, and serving on many boards and offices.

Althea was preceded in death by her parents, a twin brother at infancy, a daughter Elizabeth Ann in 1947, one granddaughter at birth, and her husband Joe on March 30, 1997.

She is survived by one daughter Kathleen (John) Traina of Valley Center, California, and a son Joseph Edward (Carol) Brookshire of Erie, Colorado, four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 12 to 3 PM Sunday Feb 21, 2016 at Mortimore Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM Monday Feb. 22, 2016 at Mortimore Funeral Home in Thermopolis, Wyo. Interment to follow at Monument Hill Cemetery.
