A large sport-utility vehicle slammed into the side of the Wyoming Department of Transportation building along Buena Vista Drive in Lander before sunrise Sunday morning.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation's Lander office will be closed until further notice beginning Monday following a Sunday morning crash which caused significant damage to the building.
"Crews are working to secure the area and board it up today, and a structural evaluation will be completed Monday," said WYDOT Chief Engineer Gregg Fredrick of Cheyenne. "Employees of the resident engineer's office will not be able to access their work stations until it is determined to be safe to do so. Other areas of the building not affected by the impact of the crash will remain operational. Public access will be limited."
During the office closure, citizens requesting oversize and overweight permits are requested to work through the Riverton WYDOT office at 3615 W. Main St., in Riverton, and to either call 856-1341 or the Wyoming Highway Patrol at 1-800-442-9090 before driving to Riverton.
WYDOT District Engineer Shelby Carlson of Basin is asking all other business-related communications with Lander WYDOT personnel to be directed to Lander Resident Engineer Erik Smith at 349-2115 or Area Maintenance Supervisor Jim Thomas at 349-1134.
"Safety is our No. 1 priority, so please respect this office closure," Carlson said. "And please don't try to gain access through the WYDOT yard in the back of the Lander building, as that's an area where large equipment is being operated."
