WORLAND— The Worland Warriors soccer team grinded out a 2-1 win at home Thursday evening against the Lander Tigers.
Goals from Miki Erikson and Jacob Lamm, on a penalty kick, secured the victory for the team.
From the start it was a physical, defensive game. Each team refusing to give any ground to the other, they were dug in like it was World War I. In the 33rd minute Erikson knocked in the game’s first goal, there wouldn’t be another goal until Lamm’s PK in the 74th minute, putting Worland up 2-0.
At 2-0 with little time remaining the game seemed to be in hand. Lander had other plans and wouldn’t go down easy, as Daniel Lobera broke free to score in the 75th minute. While the home crowd may have felt a little anxious, the Warriors were not. They locked it down for the remaining minutes making it difficult for the Tigers to get another opportunity to score.
Lobera is one of the best forwards in the state, and save for that one moment, Worland’s back four did a great job at containing him.
Coach Ron Overcast said, “Our back four stepped up big time. Gavin Weyrich, Kyle Lamb, Quentin Fettig, and Keller Rogers answered the call tonight. Made some big time plays and tackles, and for the first time playing together, it was outstanding. ”
Up next for the Warriors will be a home game against Cody on April 1 and on April 2 they travel to Buffalo.
