WORLAND- The Easter break is over for the Worland High School athletic teams, as both soccer teams will be in action today and Saturday. While the track and field team heads to Buffalo Saturday for the Jerry Campbell Invitational.

Girls Soccer

The Lady Warriors will matchup at 3 p.m. here in Worland against Cody for the first quadrant game of the season. Then Saturday they will once again be at home against Buffalo with the game kicking off at 2 p.m.

Their first game of the season the Lady Warriors routed Lander 6-0 as Casey Wassum, Hannah Ozmon and Shania McGarvin each had two goals apiece. It was quite the way to open the season with a dominating offensive display and a suffocating defense to boot.

Last season the Fillies won the quadrant with a perfect 4-0 record, this year though the Lady Warriors look to flip the script on Cody.

Boys soccer

The Warriors will play their second home match of the season and first quadrants game against Cody today at 5 p.m. Then Saturday they will travel for a 2 p.m. matchup against Buffalo.

To open the season the Warriors gritted out a win versus Lander 2-1, with goals from Miki Eirkson and Jacob Lamm.

With Easter break taking place this week the team is still shorthanded and coach Ron Overcast looks for the reserves to answer the call again.

Coach Overcast mentioned the focus for this week is to, "Take care of our business one game at a time. Being shorthanded for some practices didn't leave us a lot of time to work on things. So we're going to focus on improving our attack and defensive line against Cody. Then for Buffalo we'll do the same thing."

As for the opponents, Overcast added, "Cody returns a lot of players from last year and they look to be a tough team ... Buffalo is year in and year out a quality program, their teams are always athletic, fast, and well coached."

Track

After a two week layoff from their last meet in Cody on March 19, the WHS track team is back in action at Buffalo.

There will be a total of 17 teams, from 1A to 4A, at the Jerry Campbell Invitational. Along with Worland, Thermopolis and Ten Sleep athletes will be competing in Buffalo as well.

Coach Tracey Wiley likes that the bigger schools will be at the meet, she mentioned, "That it will be a great way for the kids to show they can hold their own against schools like Gillette and Natrona."

Practices over the Easter break went well even when you consider how uncooperative the weather was, which pushed the team indoors for most of the week.

The indoor practices didn't mean the team walked through practices either, "they pushed themselves and really worked hard this week," said coach Wiley.

In Cody Emmy Dykman automatically qualified for state in the 200m, coach Wiley and her staff are looking for more of the athletes to qualify this weekend as there were many who were right on the cusp of AQing at Cody's meet.

"We have a great group of kids who push themselves each day and with the improvements we've seen already, this group is turning into contenders," stated coach Wiley.

After the Jerry Campbell Invitational, up next for the track team will be a home meet on April 7, with a 2 p.m. start for field events and 2:30 start for track events.
