STAR VALLEY - The Worland Lady Warriors defeated the Star Valley Braves 3-2 in a match filled with dramatics Saturday afternoon.
Worland would play well in the first half and kept the pressure on Star Valley taking a 1-0 lead into halftime. "We came out strong and got the first goal, then we had a few breakaways that we couldn't convert on," said coach Danielle Warren.
In the second half Star Valley would come alive turning up the intensity on Worland scoring two goals, to take a 2-1 lead. "Star Valley came out in that second half strong and turned up the pressure on us. They were beating us to the ball and wvere dictating the game," stated coach Warren.
The Lady Warriors wouldn't wilt from the challenge as they regrouped and went right at Star Valley. The pressure paid off with a goal by sophomore Casey Wassum in the closing minutes of the second half to force overtime. In overtime it seemed like the match was headed for a tie until sophomore Wassum scored the match-winning goal in the final minutes to put her team ahead for good. The goal also completed the hat-trick for Wassum, all of which were assisted by junior Hannah Ozmon.
"We came out with a lack of urgency to start the second half but once we were down, the girls came together and fought back. We started moving the ball better and being more aggressive... Wassum played such an excellent game and the best of her career so far."
"It was such a terrific win, scary in moments," coach Warren said laughingly "but still great to see the girls overcome the adversity and get the win."
With the end of the season right around the corner coach Warren wants keep the team sharp and concentrated on finishing the regular season strong. "We need to better execute the finer details and keep our intensity for the full eighty minutes, so for this week's practice we'll look to mix things up a little to keep the girls locked-in," said coach Warren.
The Lady Warriors next match is in Worland on Friday, May 6 at 3 p.m. against Jackson. Then the following Tuesday sees Worland traveling to Cody for a match to decide the quadrant winner.
