Worland students accept more than $300,000 in scholarship money

Worland - More than half of the Worland High School Class of 2016 were awarded and accepted scholarships.

Scholarships were presented Tuesday night. There are 83 members in the class, according to Guidance Counselor Randy Durr. Of the 83, 54 accepted scholarships of one kind or another, for 65 percent.

The students were awarded $101,640 in Hathaway Scholarships and $201,703 in non-Hathaway Scholarships, for a total of $303,343 for the 2016-2017 school year. Durr said in figuring the total amount earned by the students he did not factor in awards that where more than one year.

This is the most amount of money for a class in Durr's eight years at Worland High School, he said.

"We appreciate all the local community support for these students, from businesses, organizations and individuals," Durr said.

He noted that 54 of the 83 students in the senior class qualified for one of the three levels of the Hathaway Scholarships with 39 accepting. He said if all 39 meet requirements to keep the Hathaway Scholarship for four years, that means $406,540 over four years.

"What an amazing commitment from the State of Wyoming," Durr said.

Last year the Class of 2015 accepted $256,213 worth of scholarships including $76,800 in Hathaway Scholarships.

In 2005, state lawmakers created a scholarship fund with a $400 million permanent endowment, whose income funds scholarships for qualified Wyoming high school graduates to attend the University of Wyoming or any of the state's seven community colleges. They honored Governor Stan Hathaway's many contributions to the state and accomplishments by naming the scholarship program for him. Hathaway served as governor from 1967-1975. He died in 2005.
