Serving the Big Horn Basin for over 100 years
CASPER-The outdoor track and field season came to a close for the Worland High School team, marking an impressive end for the Lady Warrior and Warrior seniors, while also being a promising sign of things to come as the juniors, sophomores and freshmen competed well amongst the state's best
On the final day of state in Casper Saturday, senior Hoyt Nicholas won the discus with a throw of 152-03, teammate sophomore Maclin Wiley placed seventh with a personal record throw of 132-04.
Senior Emmy Dykman ran a 26.53 in the 200-meter that earned her second place, she also ran in the 100-meter with a time of 12.97 giving her a fourth-place finish. Senior Chance Martello finished fourth in the 1600-meter running a 4:37.53. Junior Cody Newell finished fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.23.
The WHS track team took home a total of 22 medals and Bryanna Mickelson, Emmy Dykman and Hoyt Nicholas earned 3A All-State honors. The team also had Chance Martello and Nicholas earn All-Conference honors. Dykman, Mickelson, Porter Harmon and Mauricio Caballero earned All-Conference honorable mention.
"The kids did a tremendous job, for these seniors to do so well in their last time as a Warrior is incredible, it's always hard to see them go with the leadership they brought to the team but we wish them good luck in the future and couldn't be prouder to have coached them for the time we had them," said coach Tracey Wiley.
While the seniors leaving will be tough to replace coach Wiley is excited for next season with those returning and the new athletes that will be joining the team, "Overall we have a lot of young kids and a great group coming back. With the success of this track team this season, I've already had kids who didn't come out this year tell me that they're going to join next season. We had forty kids out, so next season we're looking for us to expand upon that number," coach Wiley said.
"It's very exciting and I'm already looking forward to next season," coach Wiley said enthusiastically.
With coach Wiley's first season as head coach in the books, what stood out the most for her this season were her athletes. She loved how hard they worked, how willing they were to do what the coaches asked of them and their perseverance. "These kids worked so hard all season long, they did what we asked and they persevered through the wind, rain, snow, cold or heat. They really made all of us coaches so happy and proud."
Coach Wiley also wanted to thank the parents and community for supporting the team all season long. The team held a raffle and sold 3,000-plus tickets that raised money for team sweatshirts and to help fund those athletes looking to attend summer track camps.
"Also part of our success this season was the community. Their support through the raffle was huge and we as a team are so thankful for that support," said coach Wiley
The WHS track team paid the communities generosity forward by sending a monetary gift as well as get well card to the Meeteetse boy who was injured during the Meeteetse Invitational on May 2.
