Super Sounds Sunday will help celebrate cancer survivors

WORLAND — On Sunday, June 5, the Worland community is invited to celebrate the 29th annual National Cancer Survivors Day.

The celebration will begin at the Worland Middle School Auditorium with musicians from around Wyoming at 1 p.m., doors will open at 12:30.

Featured sounds will be Pan Buffalo, 15 steel drum players from Buffalo; Sugar Beats; local musician/performer Dan Garnett; area musicians Shaun Nicklas, John Brooks, Cal Gandy, and Rick Phipps as the Silvertip String Band; and Grace Chapel Community Church worship leader Rhea White closing the program with solos.

According Cheri Bundren, 2016 National Cancer Survivors Day organizer, said, “The community celebration of life through music is an observance of the 29th annual National Cancer Survivors Day.  On June 5, thousands of people across the globe will gather in local communities to honor those who are living with a history of cancer — simply, cancer survivors — regardless if the diagnosis came a day before or decades ago.  It is a day of opportunity to show the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can be fruitful, rewarding, and even inspiring.

“Everyone is invited to celebrate with family and friends and enjoy super sounds to soothe your soul,” Bundren said.

All cancer survivors are encouraged to attend on this national day of recognition and celebration.  Sunday’s program will conclude with an abbreviated ceremony where the cancer survivors in the audience will be recognized.  They will be treated after the program with free sundaes at the Ice Cream Garage in Sally’s Classic Pizza from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

There will be no admission, but free-will offerings will be accepted for a stipend for the traveling musicians.

Sound toys will be given away for elementary-age children; tickets will be at the door.

If you have questions, want to assist, or donate in any way; contact Cheri Bundren, at 347-2255.

A fund for the benefit of Super Sounds Sunday is established at Security State Bank.  All contributions will be used to pay costs incurred to provide the music program Sunday.

About National Cancer Survivor Day

National Cancer Survivors Day is an annual worldwide celebration of life that is on the first Sunday in June. It is the one day each year that people around the world come together to recognize the cancer survivors in their community, to raise awareness of the challenges these survivors face, and, most importantly, to celebrate life, according to a press release.

It is a day for everyone, whether you’re a cancer survivor, a family friend, or medical professional. This day provides an opportunity for all people living with a history of cancer – including America’s 14.5 million cancer survivors – to connect with each other, celebrate milestones, and recognize those who have supported them along the way.

According to the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation, administer for the celebration, “A ‘survivor’ is anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life.”

According to a Foundation press release, “This is a day where we want to bring attention to the hardships cancer survivors face. These include not just physical side effects, but also psychological, social, and emotional distress, as well as significant financial hardships. Our foundation hopes that NCSD serves as a call to action for further research, more resources, and increased public awareness to improve quality of life for cancer survivors.”

The nonprofit National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation provides free guidance, education, and networking resources and assistance to hundreds of hospitals, support groups, and other cancer-related organizations that host official Cancer Survivors Day events in their communities. The foundation’s primary mission is to bring awareness to the issues of cancer survivorship in order to better the quality of life for cancer survivors.
