WORLAND - The Washakie County University of Wyoming Cent$ible Nutrition Program along with the "Move It Monday!" campaign, encourages people of all fitness levels to get moving each week starting on Mondays.
Washakie County Cent$ible Nutritionist Cindy Aguilar said, "After watching a "Move It Monday" video at http://www.moveitmonday.org/mondaymile/, I was inspired to encourage Worland residents to be more active through this campaign."
She has invited all residents to come for the "Monday Mile," a 15-minute walk on the walking path, in Worland, at 12:15 p.m. at Washakie and 15th.
"Let's do this for a month and see if we can start a new healthy habit together," Aguilar said, adding that her plans are to continue through November.
Aguilar said about five to six people have joined during her four-week trial period but she is extending the MoveItMonday campaign and extending the time from 15 minutes to 30 minutes.
"We'll try to lengthen it for full 30 minutes which is what is recommended, but those wanting to can come just for 15 minutes," Aguilar said.
"I'm going to keep it going, I just haven't had time to get the word out to encourage people to come out," she added.
According to the MoveItMonday.org website, "The Monday Mile is a fun way to jump-start your week with a healthy dose of physical activity. Walk, jog or run the Monday Mile with friends, family and co-workers, and enjoy positive health benefits while socializing with others and making a commitment to stay fit throughout the week."
According to the website, walking a mile can make a difference. "The potential health benefits of walking at a moderate pace for at least 30 minutes a day are well established (through the American Heart Association). Simply by walking you can improve your cholesterol profile, blood pressure and blood sugar; lower the risk of obesity; feel more energetic; fight stress; and reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and breast and colon cancer."
According to the website, "It takes the average adult roughly 30 minutes to walk a mile. The Centers for Disease Control recommends adults get 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week. That breaks down to 30 minutes a day, five days a week. So by doing the Monday Mile, you're taking the first steps toward meeting your recommended weekly exercise goal. Use the Monday Mile to kick your week off with a healthy start, and then make it your goal to continue your healthy behaviors throughout the rest of the week. And if you don't reach your goal, don't stress. The next Monday is a new start and another chance to try again."
