Serving the Big Horn Basin for over 100 years

Conrad Lass

Lifelong Worland area farmer Conrad Albert Lass passed into the presence of his Heavenly Father on December 26, 2016 at age 89.

He was born at home on a farm north of Worland on August 29, 1927, to Conrad Sr. and Katherine (Lehman) Lass.

Con attended school at Durkee and the old Emmett Building before graduating from Washakie County High School in 1945. While in high school he was an all-conference football player, was in FFA, and was in the school band.

After graduating from high school, Con met the girl of his dreams, Alice L. Reed from Cody, at a dance in Tensleep. The couple was married on November 7, 1954 at Zion Lutheran Church in Worland. To this union, four children were born. The couple raised their children with good farm values and to love the Lord.

Con loved Alice's cooking and especially her pies, cabbage burgers and homemade jelly. He loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his family and farming. He was a true witness of the Lord and enriched the faith of those he loved by professing that Jesus Christ was his Savior and Lord and that the only way to get to Heaven is through Jesus.

Con was a lifelong member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served as President of the Consistory Board and was also active on many church committees. He served as Sunday school superintendent for 8 years and directed youth choir.

He had a deep love for music and sang in the Chancel Choir for 72 years. He was a member of the men's quartet and enjoyed singing both solos and duets, especially with his daughter.

Con's love of farming developed at an early age. He farmed with his Dad who was a foreman for Holly Sugar on various farms in the valley. Con was a great farmer! He farmed with his parents and his brother for several years before going out on his own. Con and Alice moved to their present farm in 1970, and in 1977 with their son, Stanley, formed Sage Creek Land and Cattle Company. In 1981 their daughter, Janet and son-in-law, John joined the company, and in 2009, their grandson, Steven became a partner.

Con loved to say, "I've seen a great change in farming methods. I started farming using horses and mules for power, to now having a tractor with GPS to guide me across the fields."

He served on the Board of Directors for the Washakie Beet Growers for many years and was recognized as one of the "Top 10 sugar beet growers" several times. He raised malting barley for Coors and was named top producer twice. He won the National Corn Growers' Yield contest for Wyoming three times.

Con served on the Wyoming Pure Seed Growers and the Valley CO-OP Board of Directors for over 25 years. He was named the Outstanding Young Farmer in Washakie County in 1958. He and Alice were known for their delicious sweet corn.

Con especially enjoyed going to coffee with his friends at the Washakie Hotel and the CO-OP for many years. He also enjoyed playing pinochle, fishing and golfing. He and Alice, along with his siblings took many fun trips to Mexico. But most of all, he loved being with his family, going to the mountain cabin, and, following his children's and grandchidren's sports and activities.

Preceding him in death were his parents; an infant son James Robert; his brother Bob; and his brothers-in law Arthur Schleiger and Gene Miller.

Con is survived by his wife Alice Lass; by his sons Stan (Joy) Lass of Worland and Conrad Jr. (Holly) Lass of Alexandria, VA; by his daughter Janet (John W.) Snyder of Worland; by his sisters Dorothy Schleiger and Lorraine Miller of Worland; and his sister in law Frances Lass of Worland.
