Serving the Big Horn Basin for over 100 years

Gene Cliame

Longtime Worland resident Donald Eugene "Gene" Cliame passed away at Billings Clinic on February 7, 2017 at age 67, surrounded by his wife and family.

Gene was born on August 12, 1949 in Morrill, Nebraska. He moved at age 3 days to live south of Bridger, Montana where his father was a section foreman for the railroad. His parents, Charles and Martha (Storm) Cliame, moved frequently with the railroad and in a few years the family was living at the Rairden siding north of Worland.

Gene then attended schools in Worland where he graduated from high school in 1969. While in high school he had worked for Harry's Conoco and for the parks department. Gene joined the U.S. Navy in 1969 and was stationed on the USS Austin. Following his discharge he returned to Worland where he restarted his career with the City of Worland.

Gene met his future wife, Edith "Edie" Easton, after his return to Worland, and the couple were married in Worland on August 7, 1975.

He worked in nearly all of the city shop departments, eventually becoming the City Superintendent of Public Works. He held that position until retiring in 2009.

During the time of his employment with the city, Gene was a key player to bringing the artesian water to Worland from the new wells, and later became the Worland representative to the Big Horn Regional Joint Powers Board that developed back-up water supplies for Washakie and Big Horn Counties.

Two days after retiring from the City of Worland, he started working part time at the Worland Landfill for Washakie County, and eventually became the full time manager for the Solid Waste District.

Gene was very active in Wyoming softball and helped to develop most of the current ball fields in the South Park (Newell Sargent Park) complex. He served as the A.S.A. Softball Commissioner for the State of Wyoming for several years. He was also a member of the Worland Recreation District.

Gene was very interested in the New Hope Humane Society where he helped out by shoveling snow, mowing lawns and keeping the grounds, or helping in any useful manner.

His hobbies included bowling, hunting, fishing, spending time in the mountains with his dog Kiesha, where they would take long walks to video tape wildlife. He was an avid woodworker who made projects to donate to auctions to benefit the annual FurBall, and special wood projects for his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by two brothers and two sisters.

Gene is survived by his wife Edie Cliame of Worland; by his son Gordon (Tera) Cliame of Cowley, Wyoming and their children Kajyn, Paizley and Remmy Cliame of Cowley; and by his sister Betty Stagner of Riverton, Wyoming.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will take place on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 11:00 AM at First Southern Baptist Church 821 S 15th St. (Corner of 15th and Washakie Ave) Worland.

Gene requested that everyone dress casual for his service.

Memorials in his name may be made to the New Hope Humane Society at P. O. Box 1704 – Worland, Wyoming 82401.

Veile Mortuary is entrusted with the final arrangements.
