Yeske named Firefighter of the Year
WORLAND – A tradition that began in 1927 by the Worland Volunteer Fire Department, the Worland Fire District held their annual awards banquet Saturday night at the Elks Lodge, honoring distinguished firefighters for 2016, and observing the board of directors, families and support personnel.
Three-year department veteran wildlands firefighter Rick Yeske of Worland received Firefighter of the Year, along with the department's Spirit of Service award. Yeske, a journeyman carpenter and cabinet builder, had never previously worked in firefighting, but credits the department leadership with his newfound occupation as a firefighter.
"I'm very grateful and appreciative of the department and board and everyone associated with the department," said Yeske. "I really credit [Chief Chris] Kocher with giving me the opportunity to train and providing room for growth as a firefighter."
In 1984, land on 15-mile road was obtained and the fire department members started building a training center with a drill tower, burn building, pump test pit, hose testing area and a flammable liquid pit, where firefighters and cadet still train today.
Along with Yenske, firefighter Bruce Nielson was awarded Rookie of the Year, and Mike Orona was awarded Operator of the Year.
"We are really lucky to be able to give out these awards every year," said Chief Chris Kocher. "They represent the dedication and hard work of our volunteers."
After a meal of prime rib and brief remarks by Captain Brandon Yule and Chief Kocher, Certified Firefighter I candidates were sworn into the department and presented with their winter coats. These included Bruce Nielson, Jesse Sheppard, Rico Flores, Holly Alonzo, Caitlyn Youngquist and Angie McClain.
