A day of personal records for Worland Track

Cody Triangular up next for Worland

CODY - The track season is only two weeks old and for Worland track they're already seeing great progresses in the early parts of the season.

At the Yellowstone Sports Medicine Invitational in Cody Saturday the Worland Warriors and Lady Warriors set personal records all day long as 27 of the 34 Worland athletes set personal bests in their respective events.

"Twenty-seven kids had PRs which is a great thing. That's our goal every week, to set new personal bests and show that improvement. I only took 34 kids and having 27 PR is pretty good," said WHS track coach Tracey Wiley.

The fully automatic time (FAT) system was down the entire meet meaning times were measured by handheld timers. While not as precise, Wiley said her athletes would have set those PRs with FAT or hand times.

"It was handheld times, their FAT system went down. So we hand a lot of PR's and there is a difference between FAT times and handheld but overall the kids still did very well," said coach Wiley.

The 4x800-meter boys relay team made a 13-second improvement taking first. Even though they were the only team entered in the race Wiley believed that added to their accomplishment.

"The 4-x-800 meter had a PR with Porter (Harman), Tyler (Hasbany), Victor (Olvera) and Caleb (Truman). The big plus was that they had a 13-second PR with no one else running the race. To get that large of a PR with no one pushing you is really good," said Wiley.

Another athlete who showed a big improvement in the second week was Hayden Lambeth, who threw three feet further in the shot put earning sixth place.

"He had a huge PR in the shot put, he threw a 41-6 and that was a three feet PR for him. Afterwards he was really excited," said Wiley.

Senior Cody Newell automatically qualified for the state meet in the 200 and 300 hurdles. In the 200 Newell set a PR with a 22.75 earning him first place; in the 300 hurdles he ran a 40.77 which also won him first.

Brad Lyman cleared the bar at 6-2 for first place and teammate Caleb Truman finished sixth with a 5-6 jump.

"His legs were a little bit sore and before the high jump he asked if he could bail out," said Wiley about Turman, "but I asked him to just treat it as practice and think of it as conditioning. He did and he finished in sixth with a PR."

The 4x100 relay team of Blaine Kroger, Stone Ramos, Hayden Lambeth and Cody Newell set a meet goal to get under the 46-second mark. They did just that running a 45.43 for a fourth-place finish.

"We had runoffs and had two new kids on the [relay] team," said Wiley, "This week it was Blaine, Stone, Hayden and Cody. They had a huge PR and told me they were going to break 46 and they got 45.43. They were so excited when they found out they broke 46 and now their goal is to break 45."

For the Lady Warriors, senior Kylie Woffinden finished sixth in the 200 running a 28.64. Freshman Julie Seidel finished sixth in the triple jump with a 29-4. Senior thrower Mariah Alcaraz was second in the shot put and fourth in the discus, while sophomore Alexa Caballero was third in the shot put.

"It was good to have [Alcaraz] back because she wasn't with us in Casper. Alexa Caberro, one of my basketball players, was back too and got third in the shot put. She's a year older, stronger and just keeps getting better. She's right on Mariah's heels the senior so that's good competition for us. Both girls will be contenders to go to state for us in those throwing events," said Wiley.

With spring break in full swing Wiley gave her athletes the first two days as a reward for their hard work over the last three weeks.

"We gave them Monday and Tuesday off; it's well deserved. The kids have been working very hard. Then we'll pick it back up [today], get after it and prepare for Cody again," said coach Wiley.

Next for Worland track will be a triangular meet with Cody High School and Powell High School in Cody on Saturday.
