WHS track caps off final home meet

WORLAND - Competing against Ten Sleep High School and Hot Springs County High School in the Worland Triangular meet the Worland High School track team hosted their final home meet of the 2017 season and were able to showcase their skills in front of family and friends.

"It was a good day but the sickness hit out team, we were missing several kids. Sickness and injuries kind of prevailed on us. It wasn't as good of a performance as probably on Tuesday but overall it was still good," said WHS track coach Tracey Wiley.

Lady Warrior Mariah Alcaraz automatically qualified for the state meet in Casper May 18-20 in both the shot put and discus. While Warrior Jacob Garza set a personal record in the pole vault with a vault of 12-6 and attempted to clear 13.

"We got him on a longer pole and he was fighting that this week but we did really well with that," said Wiley.

Next week Worland will go to Buffalo on Thursday and hopefully bring some athletes to the Wyoming Classic on Friday. The Classic is a statewide meet that brings the best from all four classes to battle it out.

"We have three weeks to perform before regionals and the kids have been putting in the hard work. We have Buffalo and the Classic next week. Some of the kids are working really hard to get a bid into the Classic, because it's an elite group of athletes that compete in that meet," said Wiley.

The Worland Middle School, Ten Sleep Middle School and Thermopolis Middle School were also competing on the day alongside the high school athletes, something that Wiley and her coaching staff enjoyed watching.

"It was really fun to have the high school and middle school together. You could see the future of the program, the middle school has tremendous athletes out and it was fun for our kids to see that. You could even hear the chatter from our kids talking about the middle school kids' performances," said Wiley.

Having competed in two meets this week, along with the sickness going around and a few injuries, Wiley decided to give her team today off to recharge for next week's slate.

"I'm giving the kids [today] off. They're pretty sore with two track meets this week. We'll get back after it on Monday and have three good days of practice then head to Buffalo and hopefully take kids to the Classic on Friday," said Wiley.
