Karla's Kolumn: It Boggles the Mind

Maybe it’s the rain, maybe it’s the fact I’m taking a few days vacation later next week, maybe it’s because of all the weird stuff that’s been happening, or maybe it’s because that’s just how my mind works but I have a lot of issues running through my head and rather than pick one to write an entire column, I’m going to write snippets.

It boggles the mind that four Bostonians would think “Racism is as American as Baseball” would be an anti-racism message. Ask 10 people on the street what that even means and you’ll get 10 different answers. Guaranteed. Don’t ask these four young people to work your marketing strategy, no one will ever know the message you’re trying to convey.

It boggles the mind there are people like our Sen. Mike Enzi (who said recently in Worland that the reason people don’t use their signals while driving in Wyoming is we don’t want anyone to know where we’re going). Well guess what, I do use my signal and I would prefer others did too. I want to know that you are turning so I don’t wait at the intersection for you to drive by when you turn before the intersection.

It boggles the mind that people actually believe Texas and Florida deserve the devastation from Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma because people in those states voted for President Donald Trump. It’s as mind boggling as those who believe tragedy or certain illness is a punishment from God. Yes, God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah but he also allowed a righteous Job to be tested. Don’t profess to know the mind of God.

It also boggles the mind that some people actually think they can predict when the end times will begin. It’s been tried many times. FYI, the latest theory is next Saturday, Sept. 23. People believe that recent events including the eclipse, hurricanes and earthquakes are signaling the end times. Sept. 23, when constellations Virgo and Leo align, is supposedly the fulfillment of a prophecy.

Matthew 25:13 states, “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.”

I was taught in Sunday school that we weren’t to be concerned about the day or the hour, we were to keep watch, meaning we were to live our lives as if Christ could come at any moment, because He can.

But we aren’t to spend our time trying to figure out the exact time or hour.

Rather than worry about the stars aligning or not aligning or the signs, we need to be concerned if we are fulling the greatest commandment and the second greatest as Jesus called us to do.

Matthew 22:37-39 — “Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

It boggles the mind that when tragedy strikes in Texas, and Florida, you see neighbor helping neighbor, not asking for their bank account information, not caring about the race, their gender or sexual orientation, but just helping a neighbor in need. And then elsewhere in our country there is neighbor fighting neighbor and people’s hearts are filled with anger and hatred.

It boggles the mind why in the 21st century, in the year 2017 we can’t get Congressmen to just do what’s right for the country instead of worrying about party politics.

Or that people would be upset about a president reaching across the aisle to try and get some things done for this country, especially since his own party refuses to get anything done.

And, finally it boggles my mind that I actually have no issues with any of the 10 acts that have advanced to the finals in America’s Got Talent. Well, OK, maybe one or two that I think are weaker than the others, but I think I’d be OK with any of the 10 winning, unlike last year, when, and I still believe this, America got it wrong when selecting Grace VanderWaal as the winner. The singers that are in the finals this year are 10 times better, in my humble opinion.

While I love the dog act Sara, Hero and Loki, I don’t think they’ll win. I love comedian Preacher Lawson. He’s funny and his facial expressions crack me up. Of the singers, and there are a five of them, Mandy Harvey is my favorite. A beautiful voice. Kechi, a 2005 Nigerian plane crash survivor, who has a wonderful voice and amazing story is also on the top of my list.

Diavolo, the acrobatic dance team and Light Balance, the innovative dance team are the most unique acts in the group.

My pick for the winner is Darci Lynne, the singing ventriloquist. Quite a talent for such a young age. Some days I have trouble walking and chewing gum at the same time. Darci Lynne in contrast can sing beautifully and hit some amazing notes while not moving her lips. Her talent — now that’s mind boggling.
