Garden Club takes over city hall landscaping

WORLAND — The Worland Garden Club will be taking over landscaping at Worland City Hall.

Club members Jane O’Connor and Kay Fritzler came to Tuesday night’s Worland City Council meeting to discuss plans.

O’Connor asked if there was a reliable drip system around city hall. Mike Donnell, of the city engineering firm Donnell & Allred said there is a drip system in the planters. There is a water source for around the building.

O’Connor and Fritzler asked if the city council had any specific plans for the landscaping, especially in the front of the building.

Mayor Jim Gill said, “We have an awareness that it definitely needs spruced up. I’ve mentioned with some of the staff in the past. With everything that’s been going on we just didn’t get it done [this year]. So I’m glad you’re here and I know you’ll have some wonderful ideas.”

O’Connor said the club has a plan.

Fritzler said the club usually has a plant exchange in May. She said they all have a lot of plants.

“What I’m thinking, I would like to tackle the front planter first; remove some of the spruce, trim them back significantly and possibly transplant. In front of the building, if it’s agreeable with everyone we’d like to start with annuals, just like a box of crayons, lots of colors,” Fritzler said.

“We’d like to do that if you’ll give us permission,” she added.

O’Connor asked if the city would be willing to spray to kill the weeds in the flower beds.

O’Connor said the club has some ideas for around the rest of city hall but they would like to get started on the front of the building first.

Fritzler added, “It’s an ongoing project for us. It won’t be all done this year. I think we would like to continue to build up and make things nice. We needed a community project, the garden club does.”

When asked if the council had any ideas, Lisa Fernandez said the garden club were the experts and she would yield to their ideas. Dennis Koch said he liked the idea of a variety of colors.

The mayor said he would like to meet with the club members, along with Burky, Parks Department Supervisor Mike Gerber and Clerk/Treasurer Tracy Glanz.

Fritzler and O’Connor said they would begin working on the planters Thursday (today) morning.

The council unanimously approved a motion to partner with the Worland Garden Club on city hall landscaping.

Burky inquired if the garden club would be interested in helping with new planting beds that will be at the new entrance being developed at Pioneer Square.

O’Connor said if the planting beds were installed this fall they could do some planning for some possible fall planting.
