Medicine Lodge opens ice skating rink

HYATTVILLE - With Mother Nature finally allowing it, on Christmas day, Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site opened its newest addition to the park - an ice skating rink.

According to Park Superintendent Brooks Jordan, the ice skating rink was installed in November, although, with Wyoming's generous supply of warm weather that lasted until mid-December, the rink wasn't ready to be used until Christmas morning. The 60-foot by 60-foot rink has been quite busy since.

Between the week that it has been open, the park's new addition has drawn families, youth and couples. The ice skating rink is free to the public. The park provides visitors with skates of all sizes, helmets and hockey equipment. The park will be releasing a schedule of events within the week, but are planning on a weekly hockey night, and night skating.

The rink was funded through a new program through association to Wyoming State Parks, called "Park Tank," which has a similar take on the television series "Shark Tank," Jordan said. The program hears many proposals from staff at the Wyoming state parks on how to improve them. The goal is to provide more activities to do, hopefully resulting in more visitors to the state. "Park Tank" is fairly new, the ice skating rink having been one of the first proposals that was accepted, Jordan said.

Jordan said that the rink is cleaned daily and resurfaced weekly to keep it smooth and to prevent any accidents.

The rink is open every day from about 8 a.m. to nightfall.

Jordan said that on New Year's Day, the park also held its '2018 First Day Hike.'
