BASIN — On Saturday two three-member teams from Riverside High School participated in the regional science bowl in Casper.

The science bowl, which is funded by the Department of Energy tests high school students on questions dealing with science, math, physics and biology. This year’s competition pitted teams from around the state against each other in head to head competition. The winning team of each round received 2 points, the loser 0, in the case of a tie each team received one point, according to instructor Stuart DesRosier.

Teams could have up to five players with four playing with one alternate that could be subbed in at the halfway point through the match, there was a minimum of three players for each team. At the end of 10 rounds of play the four teams with the highest scores faced off in a double-elimination final to see who would have the honor of representing Wyoming in the national science bowl held in Washington D.C.  The winning team receives an all-expense trip to see the capital city and compete against teams from around the country.

Riverside 2 was an all-freshman team of Skylar Tharp (captain) Roger DesRosier and Hailey Rivers. Riverside two fought it out to the end finally losing in the final double elimination round to a senior/junior team from Kelly Walsh High School there by taking second in the state.  As in other academic based competitions held around the state there is no differentiation between large schools and small nor between students of various classes.

Riverside team 1 was juniors Matthew Gesch and Adelle Stone (co-captain) with freshman Sam Crouse (co-captain).

Senator John Barasso was on hand to speak with the students and to applaud their dedication to education as well as to highlight the benefits of the Hathaway scholarship, DesRosier said.
