Serving the Big Horn Basin for over 100 years

WORLAND – When Punxsutawney Phil, the official groundhog, predicted six more weeks of winter on Groundhog Day most people were not happy with his prediction. Some people even expressed their anger on social media by posting groundhog recipes. But Punxsutawney Phil may have known more than meets the eye, at least for the upcoming week where snow, rain, plummeting temperatures and more snow is predicted through Monday.
According to National Weather Service intern meteorologist Brandy Bourque, the Big Horn Basin can expect snow, rain, colder temperatures and more snow. Bourque stated that starting Thursday morning it will snow again, turning to rain, due to the temperature being in the lower 40s and switching back to snow in the evening. She stated that the snow will continue through Friday before ending Saturday morning. “It might slack off a little before then and you could see 1-2 inches. That will be due to a cold front that’s going to be sweeping in during the day Friday. That’s why Friday will be so much colder and you will have snow most of the day Friday. Your highs on Thursday will be in the lower 40s but then on Friday they are going to get down to the low 20s. You guys probably won’t even see 25 degrees,” Bourque said.
The weekend is predicted to be cold but without precipitation. “Saturday and Sunday will be pretty nice. You might not even see 20 degrees on Saturday but Sunday will be a little bit better, mid 20s and then on Monday we are going to get another system coming through and start seeing snow again,” Bourque said. She added that they are unable to predict the amount of snow to expect because the storm system is too far out and that the National Weather Service is unsure about placement at this time which could mean a dusting of snow or a lot.
According to Bourque, communities in the Big Horn Basin received over the past weekend anywhere from almost 11 inches of snow, as in Greybull and Ten Sleep, to a dusting in Worland. Greybull schools were canceled Monday due to road conditions. “It just kind of set up funky where some spots only got a trace of snow and a few spots got a few more inches, that’s for sure,” Bourque stated.
