Worland Track prepares for final meet of the regular season

WORLAND - Next week the 3A East regional track and field meet in Douglas will be underway but for this week the Worland High School track team will focus on their final meet of the regular season in Cody Friday afternoon.

Last week the Warriors and Lady Warriors kept the positive momentum rolling with another strong outing in Powell on Thursday, then Friday three Worland athletes competed in the Wyoming Track Classic at Kelly Walsh High School in Casper.

Junior Porter Harman, freshman McKenna Mickelson and senior Maclin Wiley represent Worland track at the Classic. Harman won the 1,600-meter with a time of 4:30.33 beating out Kemmerer's Louis Falioni who came in second with a time of 4:32.95; Mickelson finished eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 32-07; Wiley came in fifth in the toss of 134-0.

"Porter Harman PR'd and it was just exciting for him to go down there and compete, and get ready going into regionals. Maclin got fifth, he had a PR of 146-0 up in Powell the night before. It's just, with the discus, about being consistent. It would have moved him up in the ranks a little, as far as the Classic, but that's how it goes. McKenna got eighth and it was a good experience for her to see the setting for state. All three of the kids represented Worland really well in each of their events," said WHS track and field coach Tracey Wiley about her athlete's performance at the Classic.

At the Powell Invitational, the day before the Classic, Worland continued to build off their strong performance in Riverton the previous week. Between the Warrior and Lady Warriors teams, 35 personal records were set in Powell and both teams racked up plenty top-eight finishes.

Alexa Caballero led the Lady Warriors in points with 18 and Luke Mortimer led the Warriors in scoring with 24.

"We had 35 PRs at Powell and I'm sure people are thinking we should be getting PRs at this point but sometimes that doesn't always happen. Alex Beck as got PRs for two weeks in a row in each of his events. Those are things we look at as we get closer to regionals.

"Morgan Tigner threw really well and set a PR in the shot put and it's just the perfect time to be coming on for him right before regionals. He's a big strong kid and determined to do really well and has excelled that last two meets," said Wiley.

PRACTICE

The Worland athletes will continue their hard work in this final week of the regular season and while the rain spoiled Monday's outdoor practice, this team has shown resiliency and are not going to let the weather slow them from their goals.

Personal records and automatically qualifying for the state tournament, like Mortimer who is one-tenth of a second from AQing in the 300-meter hurdles, will be the goals for the Worland athletes this week

"We have competitors on the team and I just cannot believe regionals is next weekend. It's crazy," said Wiley. "The rain cuts into some of our practice plans. We'll go with what we can and we'll have to adjust for the rest of the week. We just need to maintain our conditioning this week. We're not going to back off too much and next week we'll look at tapering and figuring out where to place these kids for regionals. These kids are close to qualifying so we have to keep at it."
