Worland track readies for the 3A East regional meet

WORLAND - The regular season for track and field is finished, and this week and next is about finishing strong for the Worland High School track and field athletes.

The Warriors and Lady Warriors closed out the regular season, Friday at the Trackstravanganzameet in Cody. Highlights from the meet were Alexa Caballero (shot put), Porter Harman (800-meter run) and Luke Mortimer (300-meter hurdles) all automatically qualifying for the 3A State meet in their respective events. Harman and Mortimer both took first in the 800-meter and 300-meter, respectively, while Caballero finished second in the shot put.

As a whole, the Worland athletes set 32 personal records Friday as they battled not only against the athletes of Powell and Cody but also each other. This Friday starts the 3A East regional tournament in Douglas and with limited roster spots, Cody was the last chance for some athletes to crack the top-four in their respective events.

"We had 32 PRs, Alexa got second in the shot and Saige Jones was right behind her getting third. Some of the kids were really close to getting to go to regionals. Koby Tigner, a freshman, knew what he had to throw to keep his fourth spot. He's a competitor and we love that. Overall, it was a good day," said WHS track and field coach Tracey Wiley.

Also at the Trackstravanganza, T-shirts were given to the top-three finishers for individual events and the top relay teams. At school, on Monday some of the WHS athletes wore those shirts they earned.

"We had tons of T-shirts and several of them are wearing them at school today [Monday]. Those are sorts of things that they look forward to and are excited," said Wiley

The Warriors and Lady Warriors making the trip to Douglas this week will number 49 strong, and with fewer athletes at practice, conditioning and fine-tuning is the focus in practice this week.

"We'll maintain conditioning this week and there will be a few less kids, and we can kind of specialize in each of their events.

"The MileSplit is still a good motivational tool during the regular season and for regional and state track. The kids can see exactly where they sit in their event and what they need to do to make it into the top-eight," said Wiley.
